PH AND POH By: Ben, Josh, Priya, Margarita, Monica, Tharun, Kyra, Cameron
2
WHAT IS PH? ● In chemistry, pH is the measure of the acidity of an aqueous solution. pH of less than 7 is acidic ● Ex: Battery acid, lemon juice pH of more than 7 is basic ● Ex: Soap, antacid ph of 7 is neutral ● Ex: pure water Hydrogen ion concentration is measured with a litmus strip
3
CALCULATING PH pH=-log[H + ] Ex: What is the pH of an aqueous solution with a hydrogen ion concentration of 4.3x10 -4. pH = -log[4.3x10 -4 ] = 3.4
4
WHAT IS POH? pOH is the measure of the basicity or alkalinity of an aqueous solution. pOH of less than 7 is basic pOH of more than 7 is acidic pOH of 7 is neutral pH and pOH are opposites
5
CALCULATING POH pOH=-log[OH + ] Ex: What is the pOH of an aqueous solution with a hydroxide ion concentration of 5.6x10 -8 ? pOH=-log[5.6x10 -8 ]= 7.25
6
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PH AND POH pH + pOH = 14 Ex: If the pOH of RbOH is 8.9, what is its pH? 14 - 8.9 = 5.1
7
CALCULATING H + FROM PH H + = 10 -pH Ex: What is the hydrogen ion concentration of an aqueous solution of HF with a pH of 6.4? Answer: 3.98 x 10 -7
8
CALCULATION OH - FROM POH OH - = 10 -pOH Ex: What is the OH- of lithium hydroxide with a pOH of 12.4 Answer: 3.98 x 10 -13
