2  On April 24, 2012 the MVLA School Board adopted a policy that will enable Los Altos and Mountain View High Schools to align assessment practices and ensure fairness between teachers and classes and each school site.  At MVHS, the new policy is being implemented with input from departments and course teams.  The staff at MVHS believes that the changes will address problems of inequity at the school.

3 The changes all center around one thing:  The extent to which students make progress on the Standards including State, National Common Core and College Board standards

4 CHANGES  Students taking the same course will take the same summative assessments on the key standards for that course.  All teachers of the same course will use the same grading scale to calculate final grades. BENEFITS  Equal opportunity to demonstrate learning for all students taking the same course.  The meaning of students’ final grades is consistent across course sections.

5 CHANGES  Students will have multiple opportunities to practice and improve performance on key standards.  Teachers of the same course will develop a “work habits” standard which will be assessed separately from content or skill standards. BENEFITS  Motivates students to focus on their learning.  Encourages students to keep trying.  Content grade will more accurately reflect student’s understanding.  Encourages and rewards good work habits.
