Indicators Reminder Percentage of mature fish in catch Percentage of optimum length fish in catch Percentage of mega-spawners in catch Percentage of bycatch in catch
3
Deliverables with online components 7.1 Review of existing indicators and justification of WP 7‘s selection—done 7.2 Database of biological parameters needed in application of indicators 7.3 Internet-based software (Wizard) assisting in the application of indicators
4
7.2 Database of biological parameters needed in application of indicators Present drive to complete the FishBase maturity table (ongoing)—extracting data from the grey literature –23 new references from IMARPE, Peru (Claudia Woznitsa and Michael Ballon) –41 new references from CRODT, Senegal (Birane Samb) –Ca. 100 new references from IfM-GEOMAR (Henning Winker) –4 new references from MEI, Estonia (Tiit Raid and Anne-Marin Nisumaa) –Plus, 5 new LM50 estimates from CDF, Galapagos for Spiny Lobsters and Sea Cucumbers (Alex Hearn and Mauricio Castrejon) Interest in making „fillet“ and „headless“ lengths at 90-100% mature available to users by referencing biometrics data from FishBase (as of Oct. 2005, data necessary for this exists for 444 species)
5
7.3 Internet-based software (Wizard) assisting in the application of indicators Fish Ruler Wizard Poster wizard (name?) Small Scale fisheries tool MSC „pre-test“ wizard (?)
6
„Fish Ruler“ Wizard Goal: To allow users to easily determine the minimum maturity lengths of fishes that they buy at the market in their area. Possible first interface? 4.User chooses value from location closest to him/her 5.User is prompted to enter next species and repeats this for x number of species 6.Finally, user clicks „finish“, and computer produces a printable „card“ with fish picture, and corresponding size buying guide. 1.User enters wizard 2.Prompted to enter the fish s/he eats (searches FishBase or types in directly) 3.And the wizard spits out all Lm90-100 (and Lopt?) values present in FishBase (derived from LM50 in maturity column) for whole fish, fillets and headless fish (incorporate morphometrics tables) with their locations
7
„Fish Ruler“ Wizard cont. Future improvements: User enters wizard, Is prompted to enter the fish s/he eats (searches or types in directly), User prompted to choose his/her geographic location, and the wizard spits out an Lm90-100 appropriate for that latitude directly Once 5 or so fish are chosen, computer produces a printable customized card or ruler for the user to bring to the market
8
Other online items Spreadsheet for calculating and charting maturity indicators from length-frequency data and growth parameters Annotated bibliography of indicators literature (ongoing) WP 7 news (mostly about Fish Ruler)
9
Timetable Database online for application of indicators due month 13. This is more or less finished as data is added to FishBase. How to incorporate data from CDF on inverts? Online indicator wizards due month 19 (November, 2006). Hopefully fish ruler wizard can be well underway by end of this month (month 13).
