4. KIDS COUNT Data Book - 2013 Each year, the Data Book focuses on a special topic of interest for KIDS COUNT This year’s Data Book focused on Teen Pregnancy in WV Why? The data showed an alarming uptick in teen pregnancies since 2005 (after decades of steady decline) We decided to address the issue in a short-form “info- graphic” rather than a lengthy essay

A graphic, visual representation of information, data or knowledge that presents complex information quickly and clearly Info-graphics enhance understanding by showing patterns and trends in a very visual way Info-graphics have been around for years (USA Today), but the availability of easy-to- use graphic tools have made them more accessible and popular They are particularly popular on social media Facebook and Twitter.

15. What jumps out at us about our data? Reading proficiency.

16. Success Starts with Reading! In West Virginia, 3 out of 4 fourth graders are not reading at grade level, making WV 43rd in the nation in grade level proficiency In Kanawha county, more than half (52%) of all fourth graders are not proficient readers. The ability to read is central to a child’s success in school, lifelong learning, life long earning potential and the ability to contribute to WV’s economy and security.
