Role and purpose of AHSNs Improve the identification, adoption, spread, speed of innovation and good practice in the NHS Provide the opportunity to align education and training, clinical research, informatics, innovation and healthcare delivery Enable the NHS and academia to work collaboratively with industry Overall purpose to improve patient outcomes and create wealth Succeed where others have not

West Midlands 5.6m diverse population The advantages of the West Midlands’ diverse population base to support clinical trials, excellent basic science, comprehensive clinical services and a vibrant manufacturing and digital technology sector have already delivered significant advances in health care delivery Inequality in health outcomes and healthcare delivery Academic & clinical excellence, regional networks Industrial heritage that will drive wealth creation

AHSN The West Midlands-AHSN (WM-AHSN) represents a novel, region-wide partnership between NHS, social care, academia and industry, with the principal objective of improving the health of the West Midlands population through efficient and effective translation of research and innovation into practice.

WM AHSN aims To transform the identification, adoption spread and spread of innovation and good practice To align healthcare delivery, research, education and training To drive wealth creation through the development of a regional industry portal enabling access to the NHS, driving adoption and publishing evaluation To improve outcomes - driven through use of digital platforms

Strategy & vision – 6 enabling themes Develop a novel and comprehensive digital framework – builds on existing Regional strengths (UHBfT, UoW) – outcome driven Establish regional clinical trials platforms - support for acceleration, reducing bureaucracy, improving efficiency and cost effectiveness, alignment with CLRNs To promote and accelerate innovation, evaluation and adoption To drive and develop patient-centric integrated care pathways - bridging primary, secondary & social care Focus on education & training - delivering a fit for purpose workforce in partnership with LETB To create wealth - proactive support for regional medical technology industry engagement

10. Initial focus on 3 clinical priorities Mental health –In the young –Dementia Chronic disease –Diabetes & obesity –Musculoskeletal disease Drug safety –From hospital to primary care –Abolishing prescribing errors across the region

Mental Health Ensure that procedures are developed to identify innovations in best practise, emerging ideas with potential to advance mental health care, especially in the management of those patients with long term conditions; Develop structures, resources and capabilities to effectively and expeditiously rollout tested and prioritised mental health interventions.

12. Specific Actions Stakeholders meeting to create enthusiasm and momentum for the work and identify areas of innovative practise for inclusion in work plan Establish Mental Health Innovations Unit Establish protocols and working arrangements with themes to ensure that meaningful collaboration In the first year, use RAID and Youthspace as pilot projects for the testing of the AHSN methodology and the development and dissemination of innovative mental health interventions
