4 EARTHQUAKES IN THE USA Earthquakes are one of the most costly natural hazards faced by the Nation, A significant risk to 75 million Americans in 39 States http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2006/3016/ 2006-3016.pdf

6 EARTHQUAKES IN THE USA The largest recorded earthquake in the United States was a magnitude 9.2 that struck Prince William Sound, Alaska on Good Friday, March 28, 1964 Alaska is the most earthquake-prone state and one of the most seismically active regions in the world. Alaska experiences a magnitude 7 earthquake almost every year, and a magnitude 8 or greater earthquake on average every 14 years

7 Florida and North Dakota have the smallest number of earthquakes in the United States Each year the southern California area has about 10,000 earthquakes. Most of them are so small that they are not felt. Only several hundred are greater than magnitude 3.0, and only about 15- 20 are greater than magnitude 4.0.

11 EARTHQUAKES IN ILLINOIS The historical record of earthquakes having epicenters in Illinois begins on January 8, 1795. Since then there has been an EQ each year The largest ever recorded occurred on November 9, 1968, and measured magnitude 5.4 on the Richter scale. The last damaging earthquake in Illinois occurred on June 10, 1987, near Olney in southeast Illinois. This quake measured 5.0 on the Richter scale
