2) Identify two improvements or changes in the North that contributed to an atmosphere of needed change, by the government and citizens. Improvements in Transportation (Americans could move around more easily and trade b/t regions) Erie Canal- connected New York City w. the Great Lakes/West Immigration- cheap workers for factories *American is turning into a manufacturing and cash-crop economy

3) Briefly explain the election of 1824 and the Corrupt Bargain
4 candidates for President Andrew Jackson won the most votes but did not have a majority in Electoral College 12th Amendment- House of Representatives elects the Pres. Corrupt Bargain Henry Clay (4th place Pres. Candidate) tells his supporters to vote for John Quincy Adams, Adams wins the Presidency and Clay becomes Sec. of State Jackson claims a Corrupt Bargain because he won the most votes and lost election, while Adams and Clay had some kind of a deal

Rewarding political supporters with political jobs and power What is the problem with this system Inexperienced people get jobs based on who they know and know very little about government

7) Define Worchester v. Georgia and how President Jackson reacted to the case
Wor. V. GA. Stated the Cherokee could stay on their land Jackson ignored the decision and forced the Cherokee to move Trail of Tears- forced march of Cherokee to Oklahoma (15,000 moved, ¼ died from starvation and exhaustion) How do you think Americans reacted to the march? Why was Jackson not impeached for not enforcing the court decision?

Revival in religion (attracting Americans to want to go back to church by making religion more democratic and personal) Jonathon Edwards and George Whitefield How did religion become more democratic or equal?

Idea that people should rise above conformity and materialism and seek their own spiritual path to happiness by connecting with nature Ralph Waldo Emerson- founder Henry David Thoreau “Civil Disobedience” encouraged people to not follow unfair laws Influences Martin Luther King Identify an example when Civil Rights movement encouraged people to not follow laws? Why might Americans be drawn towards Transcendentalism (think 1950’s America and Kardashians)?

First time Americans became aware of the horrors of slavery Uncle Tom’s Cabin/ Harriet Beecher Stowe- most popular novel that also detailed horrors of slavery, enflamed Americans to want to end slavery
