First CEOP-HE/CEOP-AEGIS Meeting June 29-30,2009 - Milan, Italy High Elevations Initiative: overview overview Gianni Tartari 1,2 Chair of CEOP-HE Roberta Toffolon 1 & Elisa Vuillermoz 1 1 Ev-K2-CNR Committee, Bergamo, Italy 2 National Research Council - Water Research Institute (CNR-IRSA), Brugherio (MI), Italy

First CEOP-HE/CEOP-AEGIS Meeting June 29-30,2009 - Milan, Italy The CEOP-HE (High Elevations) initiative CEOP-HE, an initiative of Coordinated Energy and Water Cycle Observation Project (CEOP), is a component of "regional focus” aims to understand and predict continental to local-scale hydroclimates for hydrologic applications. Launched in 2008 and coordinated by Ev-K2-CNR Committee, CEOP-HE is a component of SHARE project. http://monsoon.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/ceop2/

First CEOP-HE/CEOP-AEGIS Meeting June 29-30,2009 - Milan, Italy CEOP-HE: goal and objective CEOP-HE: goal and objective Scope : Scope : to study multi-scale variability in hydro-meteorological and energy cycles in high elevation areas (above 2500 m a.s.l.), while improving observation, modeling and data management. objective To achieve this goal, HE’s objective are: - Provide a mechanism for sharing and harmonization of data collected at high elevation monitoring stations and for facilitating dialogue amongst the researchers concerned with these stations. - Promote long-term monitoring of meteorological-climatic parameters in high elevation regions and analyze the local environmental responses to global changes. -Promote paleo-climatic and environmental reconstructions using snow/firn/ice plateaus and lake sediments. -Improve understanding of the influence of aerosols and other atmospheric components on the water cycle in high elevation areas. - Improve capabilities for hydro-climate forecasting at high elevations and optimize benefits to society, for example, in water resources management.

First CEOP-HE/CEOP-AEGIS Meeting June 29-30,2009 - Milan, Italy CEOP-HE Organizational Structure The current organizational structure includes: the CEOP-HE Steering Committee made up a dozen experts in high elevation studies, from different countries, and a Chairperson and a Scientific Coordinator the CEOP-HE Secretariat individuated at the Ev-K2-CNR seat in Bergamo, Italy (e-mail: ceop-he@evk2cnr.org; web: www.ceop-he.org)ceop-he@evk2cnr.orgwww.ceop-he.org

First CEOP-HE/CEOP-AEGIS Meeting June 29-30,2009 - Milan, Italy Measurements - Surface meterology and radiation - Heat and CO 2 fluxes Map of the New CEOP Reference Sites - Soil temperature and soil moisture - Air quality - …

First CEOP-HE/CEOP-AEGIS Meeting June 29-30,2009 - Milan, Italy Multidisciplinarity of CEOP-HE internationalinterdisciplinary HE intendes to be a concentered, international and interdisciplinary efforts aimed at furthering konledge on physical and dynamical processes at high elevations as a contribution to global climate and water cycles studies.

First CEOP-HE/CEOP-AEGIS Meeting June 29-30,2009 - Milan, Italy Collaborations with other CEOP Elements Aims: Definition of the key factors in HE areas

First CEOP-HE/CEOP-AEGIS Meeting June 29-30,2009 - Milan, Italy Global Earth Observation System of Systems HE initiative will address any effort to contribute to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) within the framework of the Group in Earth Observations (GEO) initiative which is coordinating international efforts to built an infrastructure for monitoring and forecasting changes in the global environment Others possible interactions

First CEOP-HE/CEOP-AEGIS Meeting June 29-30,2009 - Milan, Italy Future activities (2009-2011)  Establish a global HE network ( Global High Elevation Watch- GHEW ) that should include all Earth’s high elevations areas (above all those till now unrepresented);  Create an electronic archive of harmonized, high-quality data from high elevation monitoring stations available to the scientific community;  Develop QA/QC protocols for installation and maintenance of HE sites to guarantee harmonization of data in accordance with CEOP data policy;  Monitoring & study natural and anthropogenic aerosol impacts on climate and hydro-geological cycle;  Carry out interdisciplinary studies to elaborate appropriate models to forecast the impacts of climatic changes on high altitude environments. 1 th CEOP-HE International Appointment Tibetan Plateau; Pamir Plateau; Mongolian Plateau; Himalaya Chain; Rwenzori Mountains; Americas (CPPA) Mountain; Qilianshan Mountains; Appennines; Qomolangma (Everest)
