3 Key Components of HB 5 O Allows greater flexibility in the Foundation High School Program (FHSP) with endorsements O Expands available CTE courses that will satisfy the requirements for endorsements

4 Key Components of HB 5 Will reduce End-of-Course exam requirements O Algebra I O Biology O US History O English I (R+W) O English II (R+W)

5 BHS Core Requirements of the New FHSP O 4 English (Eng I, Eng II, Eng III, and an advanced English) O 3 Math (to include Algebra I and Geometry) O 3 Science (to include Biology) O 3 Social Studies (to include World History, US History, Gov’t, and Eco) O 1 PE O 1 Fine Art O 2 credits of the same Foreign Language O 5 electives O For a total of 22 credits

6 The FHSP with Endorsements With few exceptions, ALL students will be required to earn an endorsement in one of the following areas: 1. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) 2. Business and Industry 3. Public Service 4. Arts and Humanities 5. Multidisciplinary

7 Student Success In order to help our Freshman students begin their high school career successfully, we are requiring all incoming Freshmen to take a new course entitled Student Success. This course will include study skills, test taking skills, note taking skills, as well as personal success strategies.

8 The FHSP with Endorsements In addition to the 22 credits required for the FHSP, each endorsement requires an additional 4 credits including 1. 4 th math 2. 4 th science 3. 2 additional electives For a total of 26 credits

10 Distinguished Level of Achievement To earn the distinguished level of achievement, students must complete: 1. The FHSP 2. An endorsement 3. Algebra II Only students completing the distinguished level are eligible for college admission under the Top 10% automatic admission provision.

11 What happened to the old graduation plans? O Students currently in the 9 th, 10 th and 11 th grade will graduate on the graduation plans now in place (MHSP, RHSP, DAP). O The current plans will be phased out over time

12 When Considering FHSP... O Think about the student’s chosen pathway O Which science & math courses will be needed? O Think about which college/university the student plans to attend O Which science & math courses are required for admission and/or chosen major?
