LC-CEAL Cataloging Internship Program a Progress Report by Joy Kim Chair, Subcomittee on LC-CEAL Cataloging Internship Program

Goal To Provide training opportunities to CEAL members who don’t have training support from their employers

Partners  CEAL: Recruit applicants and Provide scholarship ($500 per intern up to three interns per year)  Library of Congress: Provide training materials, workspace, and training by experienced catalogers  Interns (and/or their Employers): Support for travel, accommodations, and meals

Selection Guidelines (developed by the CEAL Executive Board) The Applicant:  Is a CEAL member  Has no CJK colleague or training support in-house  Works for a library with fewer than 50,000 CJK titles  Has less than two years of professional cataloging experience  Graduated from library school within the past 3 years  Has limited language proficiency for the materials s/he catalogs

Subcommittee Members  Hideyuki Morimoto (Columbia)  Abraham Yu (UC Irvine)  Joy Kim (USC), Chair

Charge for the Subcommittee  Recruit Applicants  Recommend Finalists to LC  Oversee the Program  Recommend whether to continue the program or not

Three Applications Received  Asako Yoshida: Reference Librarian/ Bibliographer at the University of Manitoba, Canada, which has 1,000 CJK titles. Spends 15% time on cataloging Japanese & Chinese.  Yuimi Kanno: 2 years cataloging experience, no CJK. Works for the Jefferson County Public Library, Co., which is expanding anime and manga collections  Shelley Wei Ching Sii: 2 years cataloging experience, 2006 graduate. Works for the Logos Evangelical Seminary, Ca., which has 12,000 Chinese books

Subcommittee Recommendation Subcommittee submitted all three applicants with the following considerations:  The applicants are enthusiastic for the program & eager to learn CJK cataloging;  Have great potential to improve their cataloging skills regardless their current level;  Have no training support in-house;  The training will be an investment in the future CJK workforce, especially for Japanese

LC’s Decision LC offered the internship positions to all three  Yuimi Kanno of the Jefferson County Public Library, Co., will intern this summer for a month  Shelley Wei Ching Sii wishes to intern next year  Asako Yoshida’s internship may be delayed until 2008

Subcommittee’s Future Role  Two-year trial program—one more cycle  Monitor the progress and make a recommendation at the end of the trial period
