3 Background The first NCRE was held in 1974.
Since 1981, the NCRE is held on a yearly basis to help not-adequately represented Member states improve their representation within the UN secretariat (upon agreement with their governments). 3 UN Competitive Recruitment Exam 2005

The disciplines in which the exam is offered are selected on the basis of projected needs of the UN in the following two years as well as on the availability of candidates in the current rosters The 2010 NCRE is offered in the following disciplines: * Administration * Demography * Economics * Human Rights * Legal Affairs * Radio Producers (Arabic, Chinese or French) * Security * Statistics *Web Design/Development 5 UN Competitive Recruitment Exam 2005

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA 2010 NCRE applicants must: Be a national of any of the participating Member States Not be more than 32 years old as of 31 December 2010 Hold at least a first-level university degree relevant to one of the offered occupational groups Be fluent in either English or French Apply by 19 September 2010 (11:59PM ETS) through Inspira* (Careers Portal * In case of technical problems, candidates are asked to write to: More information about inspira is also available on the inspira FAQ: 6 UN Competitive Recruitment Exam 2005

7 Recruitment Examination (4)
2010 National Competitive Recruitment Examination (4) “Qualitative Screening”: Candidate has to meet all the eligibility requirements (i.e. nationality, age, language skills, first-level university degree in relevant fields). “Quantitative screening”: If there are more than 40 qualified candidates per occupational group from a given Member State, then the 40 best candidates of this Member State are convoked to the exam. Criteria are: work experience, advanced university degree, knowledge of additional official languages, publications, etc . 7 UN Competitive Recruitment Exam 2005

8 The Exam Date Exam Format (1)
The examination consists of a written examination and an interview. The written examination has 2 parts: . Specialized Paper made of short questions and essays (3 hours 45 min) . General Paper testing the summarizing and drafting skills (45 min) The written exam will take place on 1 December 2010 8 UN Competitive Recruitment Exam 2005

9 Exam Format (2) Marking of Specialized paper – cut-off point
Marking of General paper above the cut-off point – convocation to the oral examination Oral examination – successful candidates will be placed on a roster Roster – recruitment at P-2 level at any of the UN duty stations 9 UN Competitive Recruitment Exam 2005

11 Placement of successful candidates
Positions are at the P-2 level (young professional) Offers can be made at any of the UN duty stations (NY, Geneva, Vienna, etc) Candidates can refuse only one offer Successful candidates participate in a tailored training programme, a mentoring programme and a managed reassignment programme 11 UN Competitive Recruitment Exam 2005
