1 Overview of Task Force activities as of February 2008 35 th SCN Session, Hanoi, Vietnam 4 March 2008

2 Background The Task Force on Assessment, Monitoring and Evaluation (TF-AME) was set up during the 33rd SCN Session (2006) Role: “harmonize and capitalize on the related work being done across the various constituents of the SCN” (SCN Action Plan) Chairs: FAO and WFP + 12 members from 3 different SCN constituencies Draft concept note: 34th Session SCN (2007) Draft work plan: November 2007

3 Key Principles SCN Task Force AME works along following key principles: i. Examine AME issues in placing nutrition within the broader poverty reduction and food security contexts ii. Link assessment, monitoring and evaluation work done in the emergency and development contexts iii. Ensure discussions at global level are linked in a practical manner to the country level

4 The Task Force’s Areas of Work Area of work 1: establish an agreed upon minimum set of core indicators that measure food deprivation and malnutrition Area of work 2: serve as an effective sounding board for the SCN Working Groups and inter-agency activities Area of work 3: provide a forum where members can exchange information on AME best practices, tools and methods.

5 Planned results 2008 (1) TF AME held first full meeting in Rome: January 2008 Exchange of information on relevant AME activities and define synergies and products that ‘added value’ Key products to be produced:  a statement and a review paper on stunting as the “principle evaluative indicator of poverty reduction”.  Fact sheets on selected nutrition and food security indicators or measures.

6 Planned results 2008 (2)  A study and/or review of selected indicators and thresholds used in the IPC (Integrated Food Security Phase Classification);  Possible support the revision of the SMART Food Security module.

7 Products/results (current) An annotated Repository of documents related to food security and nutrition indicators 3 fact sheets on the following indicators: MUAC, Dietary Diversity and Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS). A short statement on stunting as the main indicator for endemic poverty A two-page flyer/brochure on the Task Force’s work and a more detailed Report
