N.S. 1.3: Converting Fractions, Decimals, & Percents Period Odds: 9/19/13 Period Evens: 9/20/13

Fractions to Decimals: To change a fraction into a decimal, we must divide the fraction. Example 1: What decimal is the same as 3/8? Big Note: “Top dog gets the house”

Example 2: What decimal is the same as 3/11?

Whiteboard CFU What decimal is equal to 2/7?

Answer:.29

Whiteboard CFU What decimal is equal to 5/7?

Answer: 0.71

Fractions to Percents: We can convert fractions into percents using two methods. Select the method that is most comfortable for you! But you need to be familiar with both!

Fractions to Percents: Method 1 Convert fraction to a decimal MULTIPLY that decimal by 100, which means you MOVE the decimal over two spaces.

Example: 3 = 0.375 8 Decimal to Percent= 37.5 %

Fractions to Percents: Method 2 Begin with the fraction… Example: 4/5= Step 1: Set the fraction equal to “x over 100” 4/5= x/100

Step 2: Cross-multiply the proportion, then solve for x. Whatever x equals will be your percent 4(100)= 5(x) 400= 5x 400/5= 5x/5 80=x Answer: 4/5= 80%

Percents to Decimals and Fractions: Example: Convert 45% into a fraction and a decimal. Simplify fraction. PercentFractionDecimal

Whiteboard CFU 1. Change 8/15 into a percent

Answer: 53.33%

Whiteboard CFU Change 17/50 into a percent (use different method then the one used before)

Answer: 34%

Whiteboard CFU Convert 36% into a FRACTION and DECIMAL

Whiteboard CFU Convert 325% into a FRACTION and DECIMAL

NS 1.3 Homework Practice (Round to the nearest hundredths) Change each fraction to a decimal 1. 5/ 10= 2. 3/11= 3. 24/25= 4. 4/7= 5. 2/3= Change each fraction to a percent using “method 1”: 6. 4/5= 7. 6/12= 8. 3/7= 9. 2/9= 10. 5/7= Change each fraction to a percent using “method 2 11. 3/5= 12.20/25= 13. 7/13= 14.6/14 15.8/15=
