2 EXHIBIT PURPOSE Educate visitors about the importance of bees Role in pollination & relevance to agriculture Products of the hive, tools of the trade Role in human culture, history and well-being Awareness of beneficial insects in general through a focus on honeybees’ importance Publicity surrounding CCD increased public interest

3 KEY PLAYERS NC State Beekeepers Association NC Farm Bureau NC Zoological Society Local beekeepers & county associations Irvin Rackley, NCSBA past president Dr. John Ambrose, NC State response to public interest

4 DEVELOPMENT TIMELINE 1994: NCSBA members Dr. Ambrose, Bill Sheppard and NCSBA president Rackley first consider creating a permanent honeybee exhibit with the NC Zoo 2008: Design phase; construction starts November 2009: Exhibit opens in June 1997: Momentum builds; zoo administration in support of exhibit, but funding sought 1998 – 2007: Nearly $250,000 raised for the exhibit from corporate sponsors, institutions, beekeepers and even the general public
