Mobile Idle Reduction Technology Demonstration A $500,000 grant from the U.S. EPA is funding a partnership between the NC Solar Center and Volvo Trucks North America. Volvo is designing a prep kit for the installation of mobile idle reduction technologies (MIRTs) that will help reduce the need for long haul trucks to idle for heating and air conditioning needs. Twenty trucks will demonstrate the selected MIRTs and NCSU’s Dr Chris Frey will evaluate the emissions and performance of the MIRTs on participating trucks through the course of this 2 ½ year project.
4
Biodiesel Billboards A $19,000 grant from the NC Soybean Producers Association provides funds for billboards across North Carolina to inform drivers about soy biodiesel. The NC Outdoor Advertising Association is providing an in- kind contribution of $37,500 by donating space for billboard postings for a minimum of 30 days each.

Clean Transportation Program Serving as the lead contractor for the State Energy Office implementation of the 2005 State Budget Provision 19.5, a requirement that the State fleet reduce petroleum consumption by 20% by 2010. ~ One result: DOT is planning to transition all diesel ( over 11m/g/y) to B20 within 5 years Assisting SEO with implementing an Energy Policy Act Credit Banking and Selling Program to enable the State to sell excess EPAct credits, an effort that will expand alternative fuel use by NC State Government. Additional tasks include surveying and coordinating alternative fuel activities around the state

Affiliated Interests: Advanced Vehicle Research Center The NC Solar Center is providing technical and administrative support for the AVRC, a comprehensive center planned for the development and testing of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) to be located in Northhampton County. Start up funding was provided by state and federal funds for a test track, offices and a hydrogen filling station. Currently the AVRNC is seeking congressional funds for biodiesel and ethanol fuel testing. Biodiesel quality is the number one concern of the biodiesel industry. There is currently no analytics lab in North Carolina that is equipped to completely test biodiesel fuel quality. NCDOT emissions studies A characterization study by NCDOT and NCSU using on-board diagnostic equipment on 8 dump trucks found an average decrease in NO of about 10% with B20 versus petroleum diesel. http://www.ncdot.org/doh/preconstruct/tpb/research/download/2004- 18FinalReport.pdf A new DOT study is being conducted by NCSU’s Dr Chris Frey to analyze emissions from construction equipment Study will utilize the Montana Portable On-Board Real Time Emissions Recording System” manufactured by Clean Air Technologies International, Inc. and evaluate B20 and low sulfer diesel emission on graders, loaders and back hoes. Final results expected July 2007
