Overall Concept An integrated global system of regional data dissemination systems –Data from in-situ and space-based observing systems in standard formats –Supporting all nine GEO societal benefit areas –Built on existing systems, where appropriate Transmitted to low-cost ground receiving stations Use of commercial, off-the-shelf components Use of standard, multicast, dissemination protocols, such as Digital Video Broadcast (DVB), to encapsulate products of any format Dissemination is full and open, respecting existing data policies The cost of satellite communications for each region is funded by one or more partners in GEONETCast, and the day to day management of that regional system is their responsibility

Status of Work Global Coverage –Is provided by EUMETCast, FENGYUNCast and GEONETCast Americas; –Data exchange using the GEONETCast Network Centre concept is in progress; –Inclusion of Russia’s MITRA system is yet to be initiated at the technical level.

Status of GEONETCast Global Coverage –NOAA’s GEONETCast Americas (GNC-A) operational, April 2008 –EUMETCast – FENGYUNCast data exchange is operational; –Initial testing of GNC-A – EUMETSAT data exchange between network centres

Status of Work (cont) Initial Operational Capability –Is in place and being exploited; –Implementation follows the Global Design Concept and the Implementation Plan; –GEONETCast Network Centre Service & Functional Specification document being developed; –Effort now focussed on capacity building and user engagement.

Status of Work (cont) Data Provider Engagement –Each region working directly with its data providers; –Working with providers such as SERVIR, US-EPA, RANET, INPE, AMESD, CBERS; –A number of EU Environment and Information & Communications Technology projects include use of GEONETCast – DevCoCast, AIDA; –A concept for the use of GEONETCast in training and disaster response applications is being developed.

Status of Work (cont) User Engagement –Each region working directly with its Users; –In Europe there are about 2200 EUMETCast stations deployed; –In Africa, there are about 150 EUMETCast stations deployed; –In the Asia/Pacific region, there are approx 200 FENGYUNCast stations; –In the Americas there are about 50 stations deployed.

Highlights GEONETCast is making environmental data widely and easily available to a wide audience; The scope of data available on GEONETCast is being broadened significantly; In 2008, it is planned to present GEONETCast at: –Meteorological Satellite Users Conference (Germany) –GEOSS Americas Symposium (Panama) –EUMETSAT User Forum in Africa (Ghana) –African Association for Remote Sensing of the Environment (Ghana) –GEO Plenary (Romania) –NOAA Direct Readout Conference (US) –GEOSS Architecture Workshop (Spain)
