1. This story was written and illustrated by Big Toes (Reception Class) with help from Mr Campbell. It is based on Handa’s Surprise by Eileen Browne

2. Mr Campbell put seven yummy fruits into a basket at the Forches shop for his class.

3. They will be surprised, thought Mr Campbell as they all set off in a coach for the zoo.

4. I wonder which fruit they will like best?

5. Will they like the juicy red strawberry?

6. Just then a black cat, who was swinging by its tail from a tree, stretched down its paw and with its sharp claw stabbed the strawberry.

7. Will they like the soft green grapes?

8. Suddenly a rabbit popped out from behind a tree and snatched the grapes

9. Will they like the smooth yellow banana?

10. Then a furry goat stabbed his horn into the basket and pulled out the banana.

11. Will they like the juicy spiky pineapple?

12. Suddenly a rhino stuck his horn into the pineapple and then shook it off and gobbled it all up!

13. Will they like the crunchy red apple?

14. All of a sudden the giraffe stretched his neck down and wrapped his tongue round the apple and lifted it into his mouth.

15. Will they like the juicy green pear?

16. At that moment an elephant stuck his trunk down and sucked up the pear and chucked it in his mouth.

17. Will they like the juicy orange?

18. But then a lion sneaked up behind a tree and he grabbed the orange.

19. “Which fruit will the class like best ?”, thought Mr Campbell.

20. He needed some shade so he stood under an apple tree.

21. Then the giraffe bumped into the tree and lots of apples fell down into Mr Campbell’s basket.

22. “Hello”, said Mr Campbell. “I’ve brought you a surprise.” “Apples!” said the children. “Our favourite fruit.” “APPLES?” said Mr Campbell. “That is a surprise!”
