Michele Punturo European Gravitational Observatory and INFN-Perugia On behalf of the GW ILIAS-next community Gravitational Wave Network

 Gravitational wave research is cited with equal dignity in the call  But, what is the relationship with underground laboratories ? INFRA-2010-1.1.34: Research Infrastructures for dark matter search, neutrinos, gravitational waves. A project under this topic should aim at integrating the key deep underground laboratories in Europe, for dark matter search, double beta decay, low energy neutrino physics, long-baseline neutrino beam experiments, and gravitational wave physics, including theory. 2 M. Punturo, GWnet, ILIAS-next Paris 09 meeting

60 institutes, 11 worldwide countries 18 groups, 5 European countries Shared data analysis, common publication policy Last common effort: Joint publication on Nature: The LSC & The Virgo collaboration, Nature, vol. 460, pp. 990-994, (Aug.2009) European contribution: Virgo+GEO scientists ~ 166+136 3

 OK, the “network” crucial aspect is clear, but 4 Punturo, GWnet, ILIAS-next Paris 09 meeting

M. Punturo, GWnet, ILIAS-next Paris 09 meeting 5 Current detectors are on the surface, but … In Japan, the evolution from the pioneer interferometer Tama300 is an underground cryogenic detector realized in the Kamioka site Europe, is leading the far future evolution thanks to the FP7 supported Design Study “Einstein Telescope” (ET), involving the GEO and Virgo collaborations

 ET is a 3 rd generation GW observatory conceptual design study, supported by the European Commission within the FP7  ET is well inserted in a wide evolution scenario  ET preparatory work has been supported by EU in ILIAS (JRA3 and N5) and by ESF trough the Exploratory Workshop tool  ET conceptual DS is in FP7  ET is one of the “Magnificent Seven” in the ASPERA roadmap  ET is in the GWIC roadmap  ET is a common effort of almost the whole GW community in Europe  ET is a conceptual design study (DS) as all the FP7-DS  No R&D support in the proposal, but need for National and European specific support declared: JRA!  ET coordination tool within the DS will be exhausted in July 2011  We need a coordination tool to continue in the 3 rd generation adventure M. Punturo, GWnet, ILIAS-next Paris 09 meeting 6

 Three main tasks have been identified: 1.Detector commissioning, upgrade and simulation 2.Network data analysis methodologies and GW sources 3.Strategy and coordination M. Punturo, GWnet, ILIAS-next Paris 09 meeting 8

 1 st subtask:  ILIAS-next start-up is perfectly in overlap with the advanced detectors (2 nd generation) upgrade preparation and installation  A lot of technology, expertise, young scientists need to be exchanged between the European groups to support the GEO-HF and advanced Virgo upgrade realization and pre-commissioning  2 nd subtask:  ET design completion needs the exchange of technologies and an intense networking activity  ET WG can cover that only until beginning 2011  GW related R&D embedded in the ILIAS-next JRAs will exchange info through this subtask  3 rd subtask:  Optical and Mechanical simulation tools must be developed and exchanged for 2 nd and mainly 3 rd generation GW detectors  Our simulation is so different from the SIMnet topics to make difficult the integration  Our simulation has been kept in GWnet M. Punturo, GWnet, ILIAS-next Paris 09 meeting 9

 2 nd and 3 rd generation GW detectors will largely extend the distance and the frequency range of the detectable GW sources  New Data Analysis (DA) methodologies must be developed to fully benefit of this improvement  Larger frequency band, multi-messenger (e.m. & astro-particle joint detection,…)  New source modeling must be developed to cover and interpret the eventual waveform  Numerical relativity, spinning sources, black holes,…  Subtask #1: Support the study of gravitational waves sources  Subtask #2: Networking with observational astronomers M. Punturo, GWnet, ILIAS-next Paris 09 meeting 10

 After June 2011, GWnet must acquire the coordination role of the whole community addressed toward the 3 rd generation  In the past it has been performed by the WG3 of N5-ILIAS  Currently this role is covered by the WP5 of ET-DS  Coordination board (Executive board)  The overall coordination (including GW related R&D in the JRAs) will be performed in this task Punturo, GWnet, ILIAS-next Paris 09 meeting 11

 In N5-ILIAS, although all the institutions were participating (task coordinators, WG members, …), the full budget was concentrated in EGO  Effective steering policy, efficient spending performances, reliable accounting, capability to allocate resources to other institutions through EGO  We would like to repeat this procedure  More complexity in FP7 because the new European full-cost model  Need to correctly tune the man power in the project  Current budget “simulation”:  460k€, including travels, workshops, post-docs and administration costs Punturo, GWnet, ILIAS-next Paris 09 meeting 12

 The single participant (EGO) configuration permitted to support in ILIAS-FP6 the whole GW community in Europe, well beyond the original proposers  https://www.ego-gw.it/ILIAS- GW/documents/Network_participants.pdf https://www.ego-gw.it/ILIAS- GW/documents/Network_participants.pdf  Currently, the “active” proposers are:  EGO, MPG, INFN, CNRS, University of Glasgow, University of Birmingham, University of Cardiff, Nikhef, University of Tübingen  But we will want to enlarge the participation to the whole 3 rd generation science team M. Punturo, GWnet, ILIAS-next Paris 09 meeting 13
