European VLBI Network of Radio Telescopes - a killer application for Grid ? - Mike Garrett (garrett@jive.nl) FP6 GRID Meeting, March 2003. www.jive.nl www.evlbi.org

All Telescopes sample data at 1 Gbit per second Data stored on tape/disks, then shipped to Processor After days/weeks delay… REAL TIME VLBI – 10 to 100 Gbps (total) transfer rates High Sensitivity High Reliability VLBI

FP6 GRID & VLBI Purpose built EVN Correlator is equivalent to ~ 2000 high-end dual processor PCs… –Possible to use distributed computing to distribute and cross-correlate incoming telescope data across GRID ? By end of 2003, Correlator can produce data at a rate of 160 Mbytes per second. Data sets of 100’s Gigabytes. IN PRINCIPLE Possible to image enormous area of sky ! But ONLY With Ccomputing Facilities ON GRID dimensions!
