4 Future Internet & Innovation in Europe "The key to real innovation and growth: it lies with our entrepreneurs and start-ups, and I want to give them the tools and resources they need. Just earlier this week I launched the Future Internet Lab. Led by industry, this is a major investment in generic technology. Focusing not on specific applications, but on the building blocks essential to creating new ideas…. That's something that you can turn into real results, real jobs, and real innovation. European platforms helping European innovation in European cities." Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for the Digital Agenda 5 th September 2013, Launch of European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities

7 On Social Innovation & Manufacturing

8 Is a New Industrial Revolution coming? Source: http://www.economist.com/node/21552901 As manufacturing goes digital, a third great change is now gathering pace. It will allow things to be made economically in much smaller numbers, more flexibly and with a much lower input of labour, thanks to new materials, completely new processes such as 3D printing, easy-to-use robots and new collaborative manufacturing services available online. The wheel is almost coming full circle, turning away from mass manufacturing and towards much more individualised production. Source: Economist. http://www.economist.com/node/21552901

18 Conclusions FI-PPP evolves to an innovation hub for developers, entrepreneurs, enterprises, SMEs, … - Phase III opens up the FI-PPP offerings to the world - How about the platform sustainability beyond FI-PPP ? - How about the actual impact on the EU economy ? An era of unprecedented collaboration and business opportunities is coming! - Future Internet technologies will be prominent. - Harnessing collective intelligence still represents an open challenge for any manufacturing industry. - How to go beyond current analytics, from simply understanding the current trends and perceptions to predicting behaviours? How to recognize reliable sources of information? How to address that the social media landscape is fluid? How to ensure privacy is respected by default? …
