General overview of the project Objective: To create the necessary conditions for utilizing the existing and emerging space (technology) potential in Estonia (ET), Latvia (LV), Lithuania (LT) and Poland (PL) for a continous and sustainable contribution to European space programs and activities. Partners: Invent Baltics (ET), Ventspils High Tech Park (LV), Kaunas University of Technology (LT) Wasat (PL) Swedish Space Corporation, OHB Sweden (S) Inernational Space University (FR) Enterprise Estonia (ET) - Coordinator Project period: 01.03.2010 – 29.02.2012 1 Partners in target countries Facilitating partners

Survey analysis – Estonia Large number of Estonian organisations see themselves as potential suppliers to space segment; while second largest number is downstream data distributing users Notably some Estonian organisations show interest in all the categories –Technology »Ground segment: There are active suppliers of equipment for ground stations. Products range from antennas, amplifiers and filters to full systems »Space segment: The interest of becoming a supplier of products and services for the space segment is focussed on electrical components, coding and electrical testing. One or two organisations show interest in payload sensors. »Manned Spaceflight: Interestingly, 5 organisations consider manned spaceflight to be a possible area of activity mostly in the field of human health monitoring but also in the field of Human machine Interaction. –Downstream »Interactive - dominated by the institutional users studying climate, the Baltic Sea or asking to perform microgravity experiments. »Distribution - a large group focused on repackaging space data into refined products for the commercial market. Main applications are GIS and positioning

Survey analysis – Latvia Large number of Latvian organisations see themselves as potential suppliers to space segment; while second largest number is downstream data distributing users, the dominant application being Earth observation –Technology »Ground segment: Orbit determination via laser ranging is focus »Space segment: Optics for Earth observation or astronomy stand out together with sensor technology, electronics, power components, sensors and materials for coating. Further fields of interest are structure, insulation, and EMC and dynamic structural testing »Manned Spaceflight: One organisation identified health monitoring device as product for manned spaceflight –Downstream »Interactive: Main applications forestry monitoring and cartography »Distribution: Most activities identified as Earth mapping, environmental monitoring, and using EO-data for outreach and educational purposes
7
Survey analysis – Lithuania Majority of responding Lithuanian organisations public institutions, reflected in emphasis on research and pure science Lasers not represented corresponding to Lithuanian strength in laser world market Large majority of organisations in Technology with focus on space segment –Technology »Ground segment: Three organisations, one with capability of precise 3D measurement of parabolic antennas, another operating a ground station, and the third engaged in space law »Space segment: Weighted toward analysis, modelling and metrology, tribology. Lasers and ultrasound techniques also represented »Manned Spaceflight: Health monitoring, life sciences modelling, space fitness research, food storage and smart foods for space use –Downstream »Interactive: Wide variety of research disciplines, with interest in doing science in space, from cosmology to life sciences and astronautic medicine. Public institutions influence reflected in large fraction of interactive organisations »Distribution: Dominated by Geographical Information Systems (GIS) applications

Survey analysis – Poland Polish industry already has established connections to European and US space sectors, notably to DLR, EADS and NASA Overwhelming dominance of Space segment on technology side Distribution users dominate Downstream, and there is good understanding of existing space programmes –Technology »Ground segment: One public organisation specialising in telecommunications »Space segment: Wide range of technologies represented, from robotics, autonomy, material sciences, R/F technology, optics, components, and propulsion, to units such as sensors and power supplies, harnesses and possibly subsystems and algorithms. EMC testing and structural testing facilities available if not yet qualified. No organisation suggests software as a proposed area »Manned Spaceflight: No representation –Downstream »Interactive: Environmental forecasting and modelling, including SAR data »Distribution: Participation in several space systems. Main interest is in GIS and positioning
