Arkansas Nearly half of college-age students in Arkansas require some type of remediation. - National nonprofit Complete College America 52.5% of freshmen are unready for college – 2/2/11 - Arkansas Public School Resource Center Students who begin their college careers in remediation, graduate at lower rates. Students who begin their college careers in remediation, graduate at lower rates. 3

University of Arkansas at Little Rock Remediation coursework is required for students who ACT scores are: ◦ Math – less than 21 ◦ English and Reading – less than 19 5

13 Purpose Help students eliminate remedial math, English and reading coursework requirements Summer Bridge Academy

14 Simple Goals Bypassed remedial coursework utilizing the COMPASS (ACT) placement examination: College Algebra - COMPASS score of 45 English - COMPASS score of 80 Reading - COMPASS score of 83 Build community and relationships between faculty, staff and students Ease the transition to college Summer Bridge Academy

15 SBA Program Design 2 Components: Math & Writing COMPASS diagnostic assessment Students assessed every Monday through COMPASS Students reside on campus Students participate in on-campus and off-campus activities with tutor-mentors Students are not allowed to leave

16 Program Results (only 3 weeks) 44 student participants 88% bypassed remedial math (all students required) 79% of those required bypassed remedial English (19 students required). 50% of those required bypassed remedial reading (12 students required) 11 students tested into Honors Composition Average COMPASS math scores went up 20 points Average COMPASS composition scores went up 18 points

17 Program Results *(after 5 weeks) 100% tested out of at least one developmental course 93% bypassed developmental math Average math scores went up 20 COMPASS points and 4 ACT points Average composition scores went up 18 COMPASS points and 3 ACT points * Students who did not bypass all required remedial subjects continued to work after the SBA ended (Assessed upon their return for the Fall semester)
