How PowerPoint Is Like Other Microsoft Products 4 You must highlight text to change its type, size, and color. 4 Spell check and grammar check work the same way. 4 It’s like Front Page in that you must choose FORMAT, BACKGROUND to change the background of a slide.

Opening Screen 4 I usually choose blank presentation. 4 If you are opening a presentation, choose that, and then locate your file, probably on 3 1/2 Floppy A: or My Documents.

New Slide 4 Your next choice is what slide to begin with. 4 The default is the title slide, and I usually choose it. 4 You can see the name of each slide by clicking on a sample slide and reading its description in the lower right-hand corner of the dialogue box.

Common Tasks Toolbar (Section A) 4 This is an absolute necessity. 4 If you don’t see it, click VIEW, TOOLBARS, COMMON TASKS. 4 The Common Tasks Toolbar has three buttons: New Slide, Slide Layout, and Apply Design

New Slide 4 Just like the name says, choose this to create a new slide. 4 You’ll have many choices for possible slides. 4 Remember, the man with the funny nose is the symbol for clip-art.

Slide Layout 4 Okay, image you’ve selected a slide without clipart, and now you want to add clipart. This is your button. 4 By clicking on SLIDE LAYOUT you can change the layout of the selected slide.

Apply Design 4 If you would like to add a packaged design to your presentation, this is your button. 4 There are many choices, and they will set up your background and font color. 4 This is a definite time saver, and some of the choices are pretty awesome. 4 This presentation is the Notebook Design.

The Important Buttons At The Bottom Section B 4 At the bottom, left-hand side of your screen, there are 5 very important PowerPoint buttons. 4 Use these buttons to view your slide show in a variety of ways.

Slide View 4 The first button, slide view, is the default. 4 This allows you to see each slide one by one, and they almost take up the entire screen.

Outline View 4 This button shows the entire slide show as an outline. 4 This is a great tool with older kids who are having trouble visualizing outlines.

Slide Sorter View 4 My name for this tool is the box with four boxes. 4 This shows all of your slides on one screen. 4 You can select slides in this mode and add transitions, effects, etc. 4 Also, when you are in slide sorter view, you can click and drag slides to get them in the correct order for your presentation.

Note Page View 4 If you are making a presentation, and want to make personal notes to yourself, this is your mode. 4 Your slide is at the top, and you can insert notes in the box below it.

Slide Show 4 View your fabulous presentation! 4 Your slide show will begin with whichever slide is selected. 4 Before using this button, go to the Slide Sorter View (box with four boxes) and click on the first slide. 4 This guarantees that you see your entire slide show.

Some Notes About Your Slide Show 4 The space bar or mouse click move the slide show along. 4 The escape show get you out of the slide show and back to your slides. 4 The backspace key and left arrow key back the slide show up is you move too quickly.

Moving, Resizing, and Deleting Boxes 4 When you click inside a box, the box outline turns to slightly diagonal lines. 4 You can move the box by clicking the outline and dragging it. 4 You can resize the box by clicking on the corners and resizing. 4 You can delete a box by clicking on the diagonal lines. They’ll turn to dots. Now hit the delete key.

How To Move Through Your Slides 4 You can click on the arrows on the right hand side of your screen. 4 You can click on the PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN BUTTON. 4 You can click on the slide sorter view (box with four boxes) and double click on the slide you want to work with.

Adding Backgrounds 4 Choose FORMAT, BACKGROUND. 4 The slide showing is a preview of your slide. 4 Click on the down arrow behind the white rectangle.

Choosing a Color or Fill Effect 4 Choose a color, or you can choose a fill effect. 4 You can add any of the four fill effect choices. 4 When you are finished, click OK.

Apply, or Apply To All? That is the question! 4 Apply will apply the background only to the slide you have selected. 4 Apply to all will apply the background to all slides previously created, and all slides yet to be created.

Adding Transitions 4 Transitions are what occur as slides move from one to another. 4 My favorite way to do this is to move to slide sorter view (box with four boxes). 4 When you click on a slide, the toolbar directly above the slide are says “No Transition.” 4 Click the down arrow and choose a transition.

Adding Effects 4 Effects are the entrance that each individual part of your slide show makes as it appears on your slide. 4 Go to slide sorter view (box with four boxes), and you’ll see no transition at the top. 4 Choose the transition you would like.

Notes About Transitions and Effects 4 Avoid “FLASH ONCE.” It literally does that, and unless you have your show memorized, you’re in trouble. 4 Experiment, experiment, experiment! 4 Some transitions and effects are too slow, and some are too fast!

Printing Your Slide Show, Slide by Slide 4 FILE, PRINT. 4 Choose Print What: Slides. 4 You can also choose black and white when you are only wanting to duplicate the slide on a copier.

Printing Your Slide Show, Handouts 4 FILE, PRINT. 4 Choose Print What: Handouts (choose your option. 4 3 slides to a page will include lines at the side so that your students or participants can take notes while you present.

Printing Your Slide Show, Notes and Outline 4 FILE, PRINT. 4 Choose Print What: Your Choice. 4 This will print either your note pages or an outline of your presentation.

Using Pictures As The Entire Background 4 This will be the simplest way to make this presentation for Parent-Teacher Conferences. 4 When you click New Slide, come down a bit and choose the blank slide. 4 Choose FORMAT, BACKGROUND, FILL EFFECTS, PICTURE, SELECT PICTURE, find your picture, OK, APPLY. 4 Don’t choose apply to all!

Words Accompanying the Pictures 4 I’d click New Slide, and then Text Only. 4 Type in the text for the picture. 4 Then choose INSERT, PICTURE, FROM FILE. 4 Locate the picture. 4 Insert it into the document and drag it where ever you want it.

Setting Your Show To Run Continuously 4 For Parent-Teacher Conferences, we are going to set your show up to run continuously outside your classroom door. 4 Make your entire slide show, including transitions and effects. 4 Yes, you can go back later and do more, but get as much done today as you can.

Setting Your Show To Run Continuously (2) 4 Choose SLIDE SHOW, SET UP SHOW. 4 Choose Presented by a speaker. 4 Choose Loop contnuously until ‘Esc.’ 4 Leave everything else alone.

Setting Your Show To Run Continuously (3) 4 Now choose SLIDE SHOW, SLIDE TRANSITION. 4 At the bottom move the check mark from “On mouse click” to “Automatically after” 4 Set the time to 5 seconds, or whatever you feel appropriate. 4 You can also set the computer to play a sound when the slide switches. 4 Choose APPLY TO ALL.

The Night of the Conference 4 Move your computer to the hall. 4 Open your presentation. 4 Click on slide sorter view. 4 Click on the first slide. 4 Click on the slide show button. 4 Go back to your room and know that your parents are getting a real insight into what goes on in your classroom.

Oh, My Gosh, Someone Stopped the Slide Show 4 Repeat the steps from the previous slide.
