Emerging & Re-emerging Infectious Diseases Globally, infectious diseases remain the leading cause of death, and they are the 3 rd leading cause of death in the US

Emerging infectious disease a)Have NOT occurred in humans before b)Have occurred previously but affected only small number of people c)Have occurred throughout human history but only recently recognized a disease due to infectious agent

Examples: Disease Contributing Factor Legionnarie Cooling & plumbing systems Gastric ulcer newly recognized as infectious disease in 1983

Re-emerging infectious disease a)Were once major health problems globally or in particular country, then dramatically declined, but are again becoming health problems for a significant number of the population

Examples: Disease Contributing Factors Tuberculosis Antibiotic resistant pathogens; immunocompromised populations Malaria Drug resistance and fear of vaccination; favorable conditions for mosquito vector
