sales field training Wireless Network Components RF Terminal Controller (Universal Gateway) –Terminal emulation support for large, complex systems 7200 Universal Gateway: Terminal server designed to optimize data flow between RF data collection terminals and host computers as well as enhance the maintenance and support of the wireless network.

sales field training Simple Wireless Network

sales field training Complex Wireless Network

sales field training Host Connectivity Terminal Emulation solutions –Hosts –Thick Client solutions –Thin Client solutions –Thick versus Thin RF Simplicity Custom application development

sales field training Host Connectivity Terminal emulations supported: DEC VT100 / VT220 IBM 3270 IBM 5250

sales field training Host Connectivity VT100 / VT220 Hosts IBM RS6000 HP 9000 DEC Alpha SUN Solaris PC running SCO UNIX PC running LINUX PC running NT and Telnet Services

sales field training Host Connectivity IBM 3270 Hosts IBM ES9000 IBM S390 IBM AS/400 Bull / Honeywell Tandem

sales field training Host Connectivity IBM 5250 Host IBM AS/400

sales field training Host Connectivity Thick Client: –Terminal emulation software resides on the hand held which communicates directly to the host –TNVT100/220, TN3270, TN5250 TN = Telnet –TCP/IP over Ethernet to Host Required –No Universal Gateway required –aka “Direct Connect”

sales field training Host Connectivity Typical thick client configuration

sales field training Host Connectivity Remote thick client configuration

sales field training Host Connectivity Thin Client: –Some terminal emulation software resides on the hand held, the rest resides in the Universal Gateway –TNVT100/220, TN3270, TN5250 TN = Telnet TCP/IP over Ethernet –aka “Server-based connection”

sales field training Host Connectivity Typical thin client configuration: TN

sales field training Host Connectivity Remote thin client configuration: TN

sales field training Host Connectivity SNA / SDLC supported Special quote! Lead time longer with this setup! Additional info available upon request

sales field training Host Connectivity Thick versus Thin Client Pros & Cons Rules of thumb

sales field training Host Connectivity Thick Client –All terminal emulation software is located on the RF terminal. The RF terminal communicates directly to the terminal emulation host Thin Client –A smaller amount of software (thin) resides on the RF terminal and the RF terminal communicates to the Universal Gateway. The Universal Gateway then communicates to the terminal emulation host.

sales field training Host Connectivity Thick client pros –Less system cost –Less hardware Thick client cons –Difficult to trouble- shoot remotely –More work to maintain –No data optimization

sales field training Host Connectivity Thin client pros –Remote dial in for easier trouble shooting & remote support –Easier to maintain –Optimizes data over network Thin client cons –More cost –Extra piece of hardware

sales field training Host Connectivity Thick client rule of thumb: –Less than 15 – 20 terminals single site –Less than 15 – 20 terminals multi site in close proximity Thin client rule of thumb: –Greater than 20 terminals single site –Greater than 20 terminals multi site –Stressed wide area network involved

sales field training Host Connectivity RF Simplicity –Tool for rapid application development –RF Simplicity takes care of TCP/IP sockets connection –Runs in Visual Basic environment under Windows 95/98/NT, perfect for VB programmers –Best solution for Windows host environments HANDS DOWN! –RF Simplicity could be used to off load processing from typical TE hosts

sales field training Host Connectivity Typical RF Simplicity configuration

sales field training Host Connectivity RF Simplicity – off loading processing from typical TE host

sales field training Host Connectivity Custom application development –DOS client in Ethernet TCP/IP environment –C programming –TCP/IP sockets interface, large task for many programmers

sales field training Wireless Technologies Frequency Hopping (FH) –WLIF –aka “OpenAir” Standard Direct Sequence (DS) –802.11b (DS) –IEEE Standard Vendors

sales field training Wireless Technologies Frequency hopping spread spectrum. –Transmits on a single frequency for specified period of time, then hops to another frequency for a period of time etc.

sales field training Wireless Technologies Frequency hopping spread spectrum. –Interference avoidance by hopping. –Interfered transmission is resent.

sales field training Wireless Technologies Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum Data is split up and redundantly transmitted simultaneously over a large bandwidth

sales field training Wireless Technologies Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum –11 - 22 MHz wide stationary channels –11, 5.5, 2 and 1 Mbps data rates possible –3 non-overlapping 22 MHz channels –Potential 33Mbps with 3 Access Points

sales field training 2.4 GHz Solutions WLIF –Proxim based solution “OpenAir Standard” –Frequency Hopper –HHP supported –Will not work with 802.11 Frequency Hopper!

sales field training 2.4 GHz Solutions 802.11b –Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum –HHP supported with Aironet/Cisco, –Aironet/Cisco radio interoperable with existing 802.11b competitor installations

sales field training Technical Sales Tips Questions to ask –Host system (AS/400, S390, etc…)? –Wired backbone architecture (Ethernet, Token Ring, etc…)? –Emulation type (VT100/220, 3270, 5250)? –Size of area to cover? –What is being stored in area?

sales field training Technical Sales Tips Questions to ask cont’d –Desired throughput (what can the customer live with)? –Security? –Site Survey needed? –Number of terminals required per location? –Remote locations? –Type of data being collected (numeric v/s alpha)?

sales field training Technical Sales Tips Once answers are collected, 90% of homework is done. Call HHP RF Systems Engineers for further assistance!
