1 Do Now 4/12/10 Copy HW in your planner.
Text p. 632, #3-5, 12 – 32 multiples of 4, #40 In your notebook, define the word LINEAR in your own words. Then explain how to graph a linear equation/function.

2 Chapter 10 “Quadratic Equations and Functions”
(10.1) Graph y = ax² + c (10.2) Graph y = ax² + bx + c (10.3) Solve Quadratic Equations by Graphing (10.4) Use Square Roots to Solve Quadratic Equations (10.6) Solve Quadratic Equations by the Quadratic Formula

3 Objective SWBAT graph y = ax² + c

4 Section 10.1 “Graph y = ax² + c”
Quadratic Function A nonlinear function that can be written in the standard form y = ax² + bx + c where a = 0. The graph of a quadratic function is in the form of a U-shape and called a parabola.

5 Graphing: y = ax² + c y = x² y-axis x-axis Vertex- Axis of Symmetry-
“Parent Quadratic Function” x y 1 1 2 4 3 9 -1 1 -2 4 x-axis -3 9 Vertex- the lowest or highest point of the parabola Axis of Symmetry- the line that divides a parabola into 2 symmetric parts

6 Graphing: y = ax² + c y = 3x² x-axis y-axis x y 1 3 2 12 -1 3 -2 12
“Parent Quadratic Function” y = x² x y 1 3 2 12 -1 3 -2 12 How does y = 3x² differ from the parent function y = x²? x-axis y-axis

7 Graphing: y = ax² + c x-axis y-axis y = 3x² y = 3x²– 3 x y x y -3 1 3
“Parent Quadratic Function” y = x² y = 3x² y = 3x²– 3 x y x y -3 1 3 1 2 12 2 9 -1 3 -1 -2 12 -2 9 x-axis y-axis

8 Graphing: y = ax² + c y = -1/4x² x-axis y-axis x y 1 -1/4 2 -1 4 -4 6
