2 A Changing Era The dawn of the 20 th century saw the U.S. as an imperial power. Each president of the new era, made variations to how they saw America’s role in the western hemisphere, and the world William McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt, William Taft, Woodrow Wilson

3 Military Diplomacy What do you think is meant by the term “military diplomacy” TR coined the phrase “Big Stick Diplomacy” “Speak softly but carry a big stick” TR also issued the “Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine” Called the U.S. an “international policeman” TR hoped to establish international negotiations backed by the threat of force.

4 Dollar Diplomacy The foreign policy outlined by President William Howard Taft U.S. gives out loans to foreign countries. Encouraged American businesses to invest in foreign countries Often times made Latin American countries financially dependent and indebted to American businesses “Dollars not Bullets”

5 Moral Diplomacy The use of integrity, morals and protection of rights to promote foreign policy goals Wilson wanted to show U.S. respect for other nations’ rights Wilson opposed imperialism and the big stick and dollar diplomacy Wilson refused to support a non democratic nation in Latin America If the U.S. only supported pro-democratic countries, he would economically hurt the non democratic countries.
