www.southwark.gov.uk OFSTED UPDATE Inspectors must take account of trends in pupils’ attainment and achievement over the last three years when formulating their overall judgements on achievement and teaching. Where there is evidence of recent improvement in achievement, inspectors must be sure that this improvement is being sustained across the school. For example, recent improvement in attainment and progress in Year 6 may be the result of focused interventions in upper KS2 rather than the outcome of consistently good teaching and progress across all year groups and key stages. It is important to look at the school’s progress data for each year group in terms of the proportion of pupils making expected and more than expected progress.

www.southwark.gov.uk OFSTED UPDATE The judgement on the quality of teaching must take account of evidence of pupils’ learning and progress over time. Inspectors must not simply aggregate the grades awarded following lesson observations. Direct observation must be supplemented by a range of other evidence to enable inspectors to evaluate what teaching is typically like and the impact it has had on pupils’ learning over time. Inspectors should take into account: the school’s own evaluations of teaching and its impact on learning discussions with pupils about their work and what learning is usually like discussions with teachers and teaching assistants pupils’ and parents’ views.
