SMALL INTESTINE Villi: Fingerlike projections to increase surface area X 600

VILLI

SMALL INTESTINE Crypts: Glands between villi that produce intestinal juices.

SMALL INTESTINE Lacteal: Center of villi, where FAT products get absorbed.

SMALL INTESTINE Arteries and Veins: Vessel network in each villi, ABSORB amino acids and glucose.

Veins and Arteries

Digestion & Absorbtion 3 Big classes (4 with Nucleic acids) 1. Carbohydrates 2. Proteins 3. Lipids

Carbohydrates Start with Starch STARCH Maltose AMYLASE

Carbohydrates Maltose Glucose Maltase

Carbohydrates Glucose BLOOD

PROTEINS Start with Protein PROTEIN PEPTIDE Trypsin

Proteins PEPTIDE Amino Acids Peptidase BLOOD

LIPIDS FAT Start with fat FAT FAT DROPLET BILE

LIPIDS F. Droplets Fatty Acids LIPASE Glycerols LACTEAL (Lymph System)

LARGE INTESTINE COLOR CODE THE LARGE INTESTINE C, B, D, F, H, I, J, and K

LARGE INTESTINE Functions: Only about 5-6 feet Main function to absorb water LOTS of bacteria

LARGE INTESTINE Cecum: Receive digestive liquid from S.I. Compaction begins

LARGE INTESTINE Ileocecal Valve: One way valve between cecum and ileum.

LARGE INTESTINE Appendix: Worm like structure, no function. Inflammation???

COLON (4) Ascending = goes up Transverse = across Descending = goes down Sigmoid = bending part

LARGE INTESTINE Rectum: Collects feces and expels Very Muscular

LARGE INTESTINE Defecation: Expelling of waste, some conscious control

LARGE INTESTINE ANUS: External opening Two anal sphincter 1. Interior = involuntary 2. Exterior = voluntary

DISORDERS Diarrhea: NOT enough water absorbed by the colon.

As part of the digestion process, or due to fluid intake, food is mixed with large amounts of water. Thus, digested food is essentially liquid prior to reaching the colon. The colon absorbs water, leaving the remaining material as a semisolid stool. If the colon is damaged or inflamed, however, absorption is inhibited, and watery stools result.

DISORDERS Constipation: TOO much water absorbed by the large intestine. Make sure you drink plenty of water and eat more fiber

DISORDERS Hemorrhoids: Large veins inflamed in rectum and anus

Hemorrhoids

6 hours

2-7 days

DISORDERS Appendicitis: Inflammation of the appendix, HAVE to be removed.

Appendicitis

DISORDERS Colostomy: Remove parts of the colon.

Colostomy

DISORDERS Colon Cancer: 2 nd Leading cause of cancer death in men and women.

The cells divided when they were not needed and formed an extra mass of tissue-cancer

Define colonopticosis

DISORDERS Colonopticosis: Colon = L.I. Optic = eye, see Osis = state condition
