ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DIRECTOR ’ S REPORT FOR 2004.
2
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 ISC received more than 6800 data files from 120 agencies 9% of the data files arriving to the ISC required manual intervention. 9 new parsers were written and more than 70 were modified. ISC ’ s data base has increased by 3.3 Gb (out of a total of 34 Gb). DATA COLLECTION

ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 DATA COLLECTION
6
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 DATA COLLECTION Data collected from more than 3000 seismic stations
7
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 Data Processing and Analysis Automated scheduled processing: Contributed hypocentres are grouped. A primary hypocentre selected. Identify duplicate phase readings. Associate phase readings. Identify events for manual review (e.g. M>3.5, reported by more than two agencies). About 80% will be relocated by ISC.
8
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 Data Processing and Analysis ISC analysts manually review every event that complies with one of the following conditions: The reported magnitude is higher than 3.5. The event was reported by at least 2 agencies The event was recorded at a distance greater than ~1000 km. An ISC solution is provided when: There are more than 4 phase readings (P or S). The solution converges successfully. ABOUT 3500 EVENTS WITH MORE THAN 150000 ASSOCIATED READINGS ARE REVIEWED EACH MONTH
9
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 Bulletin Review and Analysis ISClocSince October 2004, after 3 years of intensive development work, all data review and analysis are routinely performed with the modernized ISCloc software, replacing the 20+ years old REVISER
10
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 Bulletin Review and Analysis The Bulletin for 2002 was completed; out of 214,683 seismic events, 37,543 (17.5%) were edited by ISC seismologists. ISC Bulletin seems to be complete for mb≥4. There is still an increase in the number of reported seismic events and phase readings. The routine ISC Bulletin editing and distribution legs 24 months behind the last date of occurrence

ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 SUMMARY OF THE FINANCIAL REPORT FOR 2004.
23
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 INCOME The exchange rate US$ / £ increased significantly once again from $1.77 to $1.92 at the year end. In fact, expressed in British Pounds, actual contributions from institutional members fell 4.0% from 2003 to 2004 despite the increase in the unit rate of membership. At year-end, some 9.6% of 2004 membership contribution invoices were unpaid. No unpaid contributions were written off because eventual payment is anticipated in all cases. Income from printed products was close to the budget and CD sales were greater than expected. Total income in £ was less than expected by almost 10%.

ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 IncomeExpenditure
26
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 Expenditures PERSONNEL: Salaries, Pension, Recruiting, Repatriation. Salaries follow the UK academic salaries scales. Personnel costs were 3.2% less than planned due to the early leave of Dr. R. Luckett. OTHER OVERHEAD: Building maintenance; computing expenses, travel by both the staff and the committee and the cost of consumables. The refurbishments budget of £ 6,000 was not used. The staff travel expenses were supported from other sources.
27
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 Expenditures PRODUCTION: For the first time in almost 30 years the printing was carried out in the United Kingdom with significant amount saved. The decision to publish 3 times a year without phase data was put into operation. The cost of production in 2003 was £ 35,373 and in 2004 it fell by more than half to £ 16,133. BAD DEBTS Mainly unpaid invoices for Bulletins and CDs. The LOSS on income over expenditure for Dec. 31, 2004 is £ 9,700
28
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 Assets The available cash (cash in the bank minus money we owe) increased from £ 100,000 in 2003to £ 165,670 in 2004. ( This is equivalent of 6 months operation costs.) The tangible assets (the property) increased from £ 178,000 to £ 189,000 123K 37K
29
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 Assets Net liquid assets increased during 2004 from £ 100,000 to £ 165,670 reflecting the later arrival of some of 2003 national contributions and a reduction in the value of the ISC mortgage for the building. ISC reserves represent the equivalent of 6 months operation costs.
30
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 RESERVE FUNDS: £ 30,000 for bank balances required for the exchange rate. £ 60,700 for computer replacement funds. NET VALUE of ISC ’ s TOTAL ASSETS: It is the difference between all assets and liabilities and decreased from £ 401,500 to £ 393,000 during 2004. This is well within British guidelines for charitable organisations. I Apologize for the mistake in the chart.
31
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 RESERVE FUNDS: £ 30,000 for bank balances required for the exchange rate. £ 60,700 for computer replacement funds. NET TANGIBLE ASSETS: Increased from £ 178,000 to £ 189,000 due to a decline in the amount owed on the mortgage for the ISC ’ s building. The ISC paid 4% of the original principal, as set out in the terms of the loan. The amount owed expressed in UK Pounds fell with the exchange rate. NET VALUE of ISC ’ s TOTAL ASSETS: It is the difference between all assets and liabilities and decreased from £ 401,500 to £ 393,000 during 2004. This is well within British guidelines for charitable organisations.
32
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 Cash Flow The ISC maintains a £ 20,000 overdraft facility with the bank for emergency use if contributions are delayed. If other obligations need to be met then permission from the Executive Committee would be requested to use the exchange rate or computer replacement funds kept in reserve.
33
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 WE THANK PROF. JHON WOODHOUSE FOR CHECKING AND APPROVING THE THR FINANCIAL STATEMENT.
34
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 The estimations are based on the following assumptions: 1.The annual subscription rates for members are at the rates agreed at the Governing Council meeting in Sapporo, 2003. We assumed a similar 5% increase for the 2007 rate. 2.We assume a 3% annual inflation rate for materials. 3.Personnel costs allow for an annual increase of 5%, which reflects additional performance, output and services. 4.Building expenses include some minor refurbishments and general maintenance. 5.Travel costs for 2005 include fares to Chile for ISC staff and Executive Committee members to attend the IASPEI meeting (although travel grants have been applied for). Estimate Budget 2005-2007
35
ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005 6.We assume that 3 agencies (units) will stop their subscription to the ISC. 7.The Member Contributions are calculated at the exchange rate at the time of writing this document, which was £ 1 = $1.9. 8.A drop in the income is predicted in the number of CDs being sold since each Bulletin will now include a CD containing the entire dataset. 9.A grant of £ 45,000 from the Royal Society has been included in 2005 figures but no other grants have been accounted for although they will be sought. 10. Computing costs include the cost of new equipment this year mainly from the grant of the royal society. 11.Personal costs are based on expenses during 2004 when we employed Dr. R. Luckett and Dr. N. Ozel. Their positions were not replaced during 2005. Estimate Budget 2005-2007
