13 Philippines In January of 1942, the Japanese take control of the islands.  In 1944, the Americans returned to liberate the Philippines The fighting nearly destroyed the Japanese navy.

18 Doolitle Raid The U.S. wanted revenge for Pearl Harbor
Send Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle to bomb Tokyo and other Japanese cities.  Raised American morale and gave them a psychological advantage.

20 Battle of Midway Admiral Chester Nimitz planned to ambush a Japanese fleet heading towards the island of Midway.  Outnumbered 4 ships to 1 and allowed the Japanese to attack first. Attacked Japanese ships with planes stationed on them.  US destroys 332 Japanese planes and all their aircraft carriers.  Japanese were forced to retreat.

22 Battle of Guadalcanal Japan was building an air base on August 7, 1942.  US and Australia destroy the airbase before it could be completed Fight for control for over six months.  Japan finally retreated in February of 1943.

26 Okinawa Largest amphibious invasion on Pacific Front
April 1, 1945 – September 7, 1945 More ships, troops, supplies, bombs, and naval guns fired than any other operation in the Pacific. Needed to control island to attack Japan Casualties = 38,000 Americans wounded and 12,000 killed or missing Over 107,000 Japanese and Okinawan conscripts killed, and perhaps 100,000 Okinawan civilians

Rather than risking an invasion of Japan, the U.S. hoped to get Japan to surrender by dropping a new deadly atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.  On August 6, 1945, the bomb was dropped killing 73, 000 people.  Hundreds of thousands more would die of radiation

37 Nagasaki August 9, 1945 the Unites States dropped another atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Nagasaki.  Over 40, 000 people died in this attack
