Kompetenscentrum Förbränningsprocesser, KCFP Prof. Bengt Johansson Div. of Combustion Engines, Dept. of Energy Sciences
2

Power capacity by Swedish combustion engines produced annually Volvo Trucks 2005: 225.054 trucks and busses with average power of 400 kW= 90.021 MW Volvo Cars 2004: 456224 cars with average power of 150 kW = 68.433 MW Scania 2005: 52571 trucks with average power of 400 kW= 21.027 MW Saab Automobile 2004: 127.541 cars with average power of 150 kW = 19.131 MW Total power capacity produced per year = 198.612 MW (Total installed wind power in Sweden 404 MW)

17
HCCI?
18
HCCI = Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition Kompressionsantändning av en förblandad bränsle/luft-blandning
19
Why HCCI?
20
HCCI Emissions vs. diesel HCCI 0,01 0,50 0,00 NOx PM * 0,05 USA 2007 AutoTechnology Oct. 2002, p 54
21
Brake fuel efficiency for 1.6 liter four cylinder VW engine
22
Clean locally or globally? Global emission (Greenhouse effect): CO2 i.e. fuel consumption Local emissions: NOx HC CO PM
23
Environmentally friendly ≡ no CO2?
24
A CO2 neutral alternative
25
Local Emissions ?
26
Some emission statistics from New York by the turn of the century… 200 m 3 liquid emissions per day 1000 ton solid emissions per day An army of tenths of thousands worked with transporting the emissions out from the city
27
Now time for the next step OttoDieselHCCI SACIPPC SACI= Spark Assisted Compression Ignition PPC= Partially Premixed Combustion
28
Partially premixed combustion, PPC Def: region between truly homogeneous combustion, HCCI, and diffusion controlled combustion, diesel Trade-off between NOx and HC, soot typical Combustion process not well known Soot the key feature
29
