Fascism as a noun is a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc, and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism. It is described as a genus of political ideology whose mythic core in its various permutations is a palingenetic form of populist ultra nationalism.

As an economic system, fascism is socialism with a capitalist veneer. The word derives from fasces, the Roman symbol of collectivism and power: a tied bundle of rods with a protruding ax. In its day (the 1920s and 1930s), fascism was seen as the happy medium. Fascism has been widely criticized and condemned in popular culture since the defeat of the Axis Powers in World War II.

Fascism’s History It started in Italy after World War II (Mussolini). Fascism combined both left and right political views but is considered a far right political belief today. Similar political ideas arose in Germany after the outbreak of the war.

Fascism emphasizes direct action, including supporting the legitimacy of political violence, as a core part of its politics. Fascist movements have commonly held social Darwinist views of nations, races, and societies.
