3. Do Not Be Confused! Essays for school (Academic Essays) are NOT the same as a Cover Letter

4. HACU/NIH/HCC  Essay or Cover Letter should be general, since these programs partner with multiple organizations  Think about your audience—while the statements need to be general, they should be tailored to the type of program (health, research, business, etc.)  Write the essay in a word document first, check for grammar and spelling, before uploading it to the application

5. Getty Internships (Multicultural & Arts)  Cover Letter or Essay needs to be targeted as to why you want to work at the Getty  Discuss your interested in the Arts and previous experience in the Arts  Think about the institution missions of the places you are applying and pinpoint ways your skills can help them achieve the organization’s goals

6. Essentials of Powerful Writing  Remember on the purpose of the Cover Letter or Essay  Create a strong, cohesive argument  Paint a picture, tell a story, but don’t create a list  Focus on the positive  Use formal language

7. Whatever you choose to do, make sure it reflects who you are as a person. Your essay should be interesting and exciting to you too! Writing an Essay Important to you  Use a quote that captures your essay’s point  Describe a specific situation or event (this does not have to be life-altering)  Organize your essay around a central theme or metaphor

9. You should already know to…  Answer the prompt: some of the programs have specific questions they’d like you to address within the essay/cover letter  Draft your statement ahead of time and revise, revise, revise  Get a second opinion  Conform to the regulations outlined in the application (length, format, word count)  Try again, if at first you don’t succeed

10. Additional Tips  Check program websites for guides to the application (for example, many programs have webinars or youtube videos offering tips)  Talk to other Whittier College students who have successfully applied to programs  Take the time to do your research
