RESPECT at CMS 1.Yourself 2.Others 3.Property

Goal #1 of EBS at CMS  Create an EFFECTIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT  What does this mean?  Make CMS a place where EVERYONE can learn and feel comfortable.  What helps us achieve this goal?  An environment of RESPECT

What does Respect Others look like?  Giving other compliments or encouragement.  Respect personal space of others  Help Clean up at lunch  Include others in activities

Ways in which people are disrespected...  Verbal : name calling, teasing, rumours, racial slurs  Social: Gossiping, Embarrassing another, spreading rumours, excluding individuals or groups  Physical: pushing/shoving, hitting, chasing  Cyber: text-messaging, internet rumours

Goal of EBS: Creating an Effective learning environment  No one feels disrespected  We have to understand that sometimes we make others feel disrespected even when we didn’t mean to  We need a way to let each other know when we feel disrespected so we will stop problems before they get big

Why do we need this? (figures taken from a presentation by R. Horner @ Making Connections Conference 11\07 Vancouver, B.C.) 7 Stop/Walk/Talk  When you experience disrespect or when you see another student being disrespected at CMS you need to follow these 3 steps: 1.Stop: Let the person know you want them to stop by using the CMS stop signal (too far) 2. Walk: If the disrespect does not stop you should walk away. Walking away works because it takes away the “pay off”. 3. Talk: If you tell the other student to stop and then walk away and if the disrespect still does not stop, you need to talk to an adult.

When to use the Stop Signal...  Nicole is teasing Taylor and calling her names  Tyson and Kelly are joking around when Tyson takes the joke too far and starts to make rude comments  Dylan and Jordan are joking around and pushing each other when Dylan starts to push and shove too hard.

When not to use the Stop Signal..  Nicole continues to tease Taylor, even after Taylor has asked her to stop.  As a joke! Not funny and will not be treated like it is.  When really serious things happen

What if we disrespect someone when we don’t mean to?  Sometimes we make people feel disrespected without meaning to.  What do you do if someone gives you the stop signal and you don’t agree? 1.Stop what you are doing 2.Stay Calm 3.Go on with your day

Watching others being disrespected...  When you see someone else being disrespected you have a social responsibility to protect the learning environment of the person being disrespected.  Has anyone seen this happening in our school?  What can you do to stop this situation?

What will happen when you report disrespect to an Adult? 1.Adults will thank you for coming to them 2.They will ask you what the problem is 3.They will ask you if you said stop 4.They will ask you if you walked away calmly 5.They will investigate incident

 How can Stop/Walk/Talk be used when someone uses a rude or inappropriate comment?  Often, those that say things that are rude or inappropriate do not even realize that they are being disrespectful.  Sometimes this means explaining why what someone said is rude or inappropriate. Rude or Inappropriate Comment

Gossip  How can Stop\Walk\Talk be used when someone says something disrespectful about another student?  Often the target will not even hear the gossip, so it is important that if you DO hear the remark to say stop?  Sometimes this means saying stop to your friends, which can be hard to do.

Cyber  How can Stop/Walk/Talk be used when someone uses the computer or cell phone to be disrespectful or unkind to others?  Here, walking away may not be possible, in which case, you should skip to the talk step
