1 Lesson Starter Explain, in detail, some of the benefits of joining a trade union. One benefit of joining a union is that union members tend to get paid higher than people who are not in a union. The average pay for someone in a union is £14 per hour whilst for non-union members it is £12 in Britain today. Therefore in the current recession it is perhaps better to be in a union as you would get paid higher.

Currently 6.5 million union members in UK More women than men in trade unions 29.4% of female workers unionised, only 23.8% of men Employees of a UK nationality have higher union membership of 27.2% compared with non UK nationals whose union membership is 21.3%.

7 Changes by Region Of the four nations, union membership in 2010 rose in Scotland by 0.5% to 32.3% compared to 2009, but fell in all other nations by 0.9% each in England (to 25.2%) and Wales (34.%), and by 4.2% in Northern Ireland to 35.% Amongst the English regions, union membership fell in all regions with the North East recording the largest fall in union membership of 7.4% over the decade whilst the East of England had the smallest fall of 1.0%

9 Pay of Union Members The average hourly earnings of union members was £14.00 in 2010, 16.7% more than the earnings of non-members (£12.00 per hour).
