Inquiry and IBL pedagogies How do we plan for IBL in science? Tool II-2: Planning for IBL: students generating questions

Overview Aim: To develop an understanding of how to further IBL through students generating their own questions for investigation We will: Explore the use of images as a means to identify questions to investigate Identify other strategies to support students in generating questions to investigate Consider the opportunities and challenges provided by inquiries based on students raising questions Prepare to use an approach with a class

Generating Questions As individuals consider the following 5 images. You will see each for 1 minute. In this time list as many questions as you can think of that could be the subject of investigation. These questions should include some element of science but might be cross curricular as well. Be ready to share your questions with the whole group.

Tiger in cage

Questions identified

Other approaches to generating questions In pairs discuss other ways to support students in generating their own inquiry questions. List the methods identified ready for sharing with the whole group.

Approaches, opportunities and challenges What approaches to generating questions have you identified? What are the opportunities and challenges provided by these various approaches?

Finishing off Pick an approach to students generating their own questions and trial this with a group. After the lesson/series of lessons: Reflect on the responses of students to the task; Identify anything you have learned yourself or would do differently; Be ready to report back to the group next time.
