Respect for All with Islington SACRE at Arsenal Football Club, April 2013 Deborah Weston + Lat Blaylock

Something close to a perfect venue for an RE conference...

Some kinds of excitement added to learning make a magic experience

100 pupils and teachers from 15 Islington schools

Key learning intention, to enable pupils to speak for themselves about religion and belief

Stay standing if you ever hurt or killed an animal and regretted it...

Bees, wasps, flies, spiders, and a hamster, a pigeon and a dog. We all felt so sorry!

Stay standing if you ever saw someone lose it in public – road rage, sweary tears, and many more!

What would you ask God if you could put questions to the ‘All Knowing?’

Post it notes: 700 ideas in seven minutes. Easy.

A powerful way of collecting and sharing thoughts about the day’s theme of respect for all

Silent discussion: If God is real, good, powerful, then why does God let disasters happen?

Each pupil gives a first idea, and then others write their responses – to support, or disagree

Teachers were surprised at the philosophical depth of Y5 answers – supported by some of our Year 8s.

Why do some people believe in God even in suffering?

Why do some people not believe in god, even though they have had lucky lives?

The silent discussion is particularly good at deepening thinking and giving time. You can express ideas well if you write them, but also the meeting of minds deepens everyone’s thoughts.

“God lets disasters happen to make us realise what would happen without him.” “I disagree: God is around us every day....”

Looks like speed dating. You move round the circle every ninety seconds

If you could take a religious leader to lunch, who, where and what would you talk about? “I’d take Jesus to MacDonalds, because I don’t think he ever had a Big Mac. I’d ask why did he forgive people, even the thief who was crucified with him?

For the pupil, this kind of RE makes their heads hurt – and makes them think the subject is about their own ideas. Which it is!

The religious leaders should listen to the young!

“They are all so different, yet all so similar...”

Young people are often more alert to the place of religion and belief in life than many adults

What would you write?

Our afternoon set a creative team challenge

Every student took a theme of peace, a logo for RE, open mindedness...

Young men and young women working together (in some groups...)

What image would you choose to symbolise a more respectful Islington?

3-D modelling, or 2-D art were in use...
