2. Scale Maps have to be drawn smaller than real life to fit on a piece of paper. A scale shows you how much smaller they are than in real life. Measuring distances on a map and then placing them on a scale tells you the real distance between places. Every map should have a scale line.

3. What is the length of each individual square? 5 km

4. Now you can have a go! You need a strip of paper, a ruler and a pencil. Attempt activities 1 and 2 on page 95 of the Foundations textbook. You have 10 minutes.

5. What if the distances are not in a straight line? The same method as before can be applied but you do have to split the route into sections, and turn you strip of paper at each bend.

6. Now you can have a go! You need a strip of paper, a ruler and a pencil. Attempt activities 3 and 4 on page 95 of the Foundations textbook. You have 15 minutes. If you have completed both of those congratulations, you can now earn yourself a merit by completing task 5.
