1 Map Skills 2 ‘Scales’ To understand how we can measure distances on a map. 1.Explain the terms ‘Scale’ and ‘Scale line’. Scale Line

2 Scale Maps have to be drawn smaller than real life to fit on a piece of paper. A scale shows you how much smaller they are than in real life. Measuring distances on a map and then placing them on a scale tells you the real distance between places. Every map should have a scale line.

3 What is the length of each individual square? 5 km

4 Now you can have a go! You need a strip of paper, a ruler and a pencil. Attempt activities 1 and 2 on page 95 of the Foundations textbook. You have 10 minutes.

5 What if the distances are not in a straight line? The same method as before can be applied but you do have to split the route into sections, and turn you strip of paper at each bend.

6 Now you can have a go! You need a strip of paper, a ruler and a pencil. Attempt activities 3 and 4 on page 95 of the Foundations textbook. You have 15 minutes. If you have completed both of those congratulations, you can now earn yourself a merit by completing task 5.
