 More than half of the world's estimated 10 million species of plants, animals, insects and microorganisms (germs etc,etc…) live in the tropical rainforests. The majority of these will be destroyed or severely threatened over the next quarter century due to rainforest destruction.

Lack of air: trees produce air for mankind by absorbing carbon dioxide (the gas we breath out) and pump out oxygen (the gas we need to stay alive).
The Amazon Rainforest has been described as the "Lungs of our Planet"

Cancer cures in plants: 745,180 men and 629,00 women are diagnosed with cancer every year. Medical experts say that they have found 300,000 different plants that are active against cancer cells. 70% of these plants live in rainforests so if we use up all of these plants it could be a disaster for mankind.

At least 80% of the developed world's diet originated in the tropical rainforest. Its bountiful gifts to the world include fruits like avocados, coconuts, figs, oranges, lemons, grapefruit, bananas, guavas, pineapples, mangos and tomatoes; vegetables including corn, potatoes, rice, winter squash and yams; spices like black pepper, cayenne, chocolate, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, sugar cane, tumeric, coffee and vanilla and nuts including Brazil nuts and cashews

10. How can we save the rainforest?
World Wildlife Fund, Conservation International, Nature Conservancy work with the government
Increase public awareness about the importance of the rainforest
Establishing protected areas
