As a Teacher/Coach, not only do you have to have to look out for the welfare of the children and young participants, you must be aware of strategies to ensure your own protection when working with children and young people. We are fast becoming a culture where it is common for individuals to be fined, sacked and even sued due to incompetence. To prevent this from happening you must be aware of your own expectations and responsibilities and the strategies put in place to protect you.

Q UALIFICATIONS Before performing a job you should check you have the appropriate and adequate qualifications to perform your duties safely. K NOW YOUR LIMITS & B OUNDARIES Prevention is the best cure, and it seems best to not allow yourself to be placed in a “sticky” situation!! Be careful who you give your mobile number to! Is it necessary? Is their a group mobile or office number you could use? Be aware of your physical boundaries, never invade someone’s personal space. Social Networking sites. Is it appropriate to be friends on Facebook or follow on Twitter individuals you know in a professional basis.

K NOW THE P ROCEDURES TO F OLLOW & S IGNS TO L OOK OUT FOR As a Teacher / Coach you need to be aware of the signs of abuse & procedures to follow should anything become apparent. School policies and procedures. The F.A. policies and procedures. Who to contact in Social Service? Who is your Welfare Officer? Not knowing or playing dumb is not an excuse!! What are the signs & symptoms of Child neglect & abuse?

I NSURANCE You must be insured to carry out your job so that in the unlikely event that something does go wrong you are covered for financial claims & legal support. As a coach you must be a member of FALCC – the Football Association Licensed Coaches Club. Insurance costs around £36 per year & covers public liability insurance up to £5 million As a Teacher being a member of one of the Unions such as NASUWT & NUT will provide insurance as will the educational establishment you work in.

CRB (C RIMINAL R ECORDS B UREAU ) D ISCLOSURE Make sure you have an up to date CRB check which will give you a number you can provide to employers. They can then check you are appropriate to work with children and vulnerable adults.
