TODAY’S IT TEAMS IN SILOS 70% 20% 10% Compute Storage Network
Virtualization Application 70% 20% 10% Maintaining operations cost New software investments New hardware investments IT BUDGET The IT organization today tends to mirror the component mindset, creating a set of silos, each with its own view of resources and operations. This is how most IT has been organized for many years. Different departments select components from multiple vendors, complicating procurement and integration of components into infrastructure that can support applications. Each silo has unique integration points various infrastructure components, creating many different and flawed views of the infrastructure. Many customers report of mounting complexity in the seams between departments, making collaboration on budgeting, planning and execution increasingly difficult. Today, working across silos is seen as one of the biggest challenges in the data center. The result, according to analysts, is that the majority of the IT budget is spent on maintaining operations rather than investing in new business capability. VDI deployment Challenges
Cost and business case Complexity of deployment and management Sub-optimal end-user desktop experience VDI The VDI market is very sensitive to price per desktop. Vendors have been struggling to offer viable VDI solution to customer with traditional storage array. The fundamental requirement of VDI solution is higher IOPS per desktop at lower cost. If the VDI solution is designed on the basis of IOPS, then with traditional storage arrays the price of virtual desktop goes much higher. Today, VDI solutions are designed with price per desktop in mind – the result being lower IOPS, poor performance and, ultimately, unhappy end users. Most of VDI implementations with traditional storage technology fail, redesigned after deployment, or abandoned by the customers after the initial proof of concepts. Further, the cost savings from running a virtual desktop environment over a desktop typically vanishes with the added cost of administration and maintenance of the VDI setup. 7 out of 10 reasons identified as common VDI mistakes are related to storage. So organization are forced into utilizing complex strategies to work around VDI problems with limited success. This involves time-consuming planning, error-prone design, and tedious manual configuration with compromised results. VDI places tremendously high loads on storage systems as the I/O from virtualized desktops is aggregated and randomized by the interleaving of requests, and very often this lead to overall escalating cost. User experience (how responsive the virtual desktop session) is critical to the success of a VDI project. Today, user experience expectations are increasingly based on connecting myriad devices such as tablets and ultra books. Knowledge workers accustomed to working a desktop can peak 2,000 IOPS, and are expecting to same kind of responsiveness on a VDI service.

Results with Vblock Specialized Systems
Simple administration–deploy new “ready-to-use” desktops in seconds Dramatic storage and server cost reduction–lower cost per desktop Scale to any number of desktops with consistent user experience, higher IOPS per desktop In summary: VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) is an attractive solution for many organizations due to its ability to centrally manage desktops and applications, support a geographically diverse and mobile workforce, enforce “bring your own device” IT policies, and provide a secure environment for valuable corporate information assets. In order for VDI projects to succeed, they must exceed expectations of desktop performance and user experience, be price competitive with physical desktops, and simplify desktop deployment and administration tasks. Vblock™ Specialized System for Extreme Applications offers many features that make it a perfect fit for VDI use cases. Starting with 4K IOPS performance of 150K fully random is unmatched with traditional arrays used in current VDI deployment (VNX 5300 delivers up to 48K IPOS). One of many advantages of 100% flash array is much higher IOPS availability for each virtual desktops. Higher IOPS means faster boot up time, optimal user experience, no need to optimize window’s image (by turning off bells and jingles) for VDI, much faster mass suspend and resume of desktops, and rapid deployment and recompose time. XtremIO also offers Inline deduplication. If employed, storage performance for user data can increases by 5X. Also, speed of SSD array may help with offloading RAM processing to the array reducing the server RAM cost up 25%. One of the VDI challenges has been user data requirement for life of the virtual desktop. Estimates for user data capacity range can be from 50GB to 500GB. With user data requirement being very flexible, scalable array for user data must be implemented. Scalability of this Vblock Specialized System is incredibly powerful for VDI deployment. With XtremIO, requirements performance and user data can be scaled with physically adding another brick and XtremIO will load balance incoming IO between two or more nodes. Continuous Availability and Trusted Security—When 24x7 availability and security are required, the system provides the best in business continuity options, security, and compliance. Lowest Cost per Virtual Desktop – with Vblock™ Specialized System for Extreme Applications, VDI environments can be deployed and managed at a lower per desktop cost. Due to XtremIO’s inline data reduction and massive performance density, the cost per desktop is lower than with other VDI solutions, allowing VDI desktops to by deployed for less than their physical desktop counterparts. Scale-out design – this Vblock system is based on a building block approach that can start small (~1,000 desktops) and grow to nearly any scale required. The system grows capacity and performance linearly as building blocks are added, making VDI sizing and management of future growth extremely simple. In addition, support of Isilon array offers customers flexibility to store user and application data on it, data that is far less dynamic. Right Sizing from the Start—Too many organizations settle for “optimized” desktops—which mean compromised performance. A Vblock System makes right-sizing easy—letting you scale to any number of desktops and burst to deliver significantly higher I/O per desktop. Choose from leading VDI solutions such as VMware Horizon View or Citrix XenDesktop. Roll out new user desktops nearly instantaneously. And enjoy simplified system administration that lets you make better use of your IT team’s valuable time. Simplified Administration – Vblock™ Specialized System for Extreme Applications requires only a few basic setup steps that can be completed in minutes, and absolutely no tuning or ongoing administration in order to achieve and maintain high performance levels.
