Organisational Information Systems Centralised Database
2
This means that an organisation has one large powerful database which is central to the successful operation of the organisation. This database can be accessed by lots of users at the same time. Organisations with a centralised database include :- – Travel agents (details of holidays available) – Ticket booking agencies (details of seats available) – Bank (details of customer accounts)
3
Impact of having a Centralised DB Information can be found quickly and easily (because it’s all in one place - use search) Many users can access the database at once (from offices all over the country – multi-access) Can be customised for different levels of access (managers need to see more information than counter staff) Information is always up-to-date (because it is updated every time someone makes a transaction)
4
Advantages of a centralised DB Quicker and easier to organise the data (to sort it, to search for certain records) Quicker and easier to edit/update the data (when a booking is made, when someone moves house) Quicker and easier to back-up the data (because it’s all in one place) Quicker and easier to communicate (to contact customers about a change in time)
