The Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association Gas to Grid Issues
2
ADBA: a brief synopsis Established September 2009 Objective: to break down the barriers and build a mature, safe industry Over 250 members Represents all of the key AD industry sectors In England, Wales, Scotland & N Ireland Developed good working relationships with Government and related sectors Speaks with a single, united voice
3
GSMR Requirements Current oxygen content limit (0.2%) is too low Producers would like to see increase ideally to 2%, most would settle for 1%
4
Grid Connections Quotations are high – and can vary significantly between projects – How can we reduce costs (and time taken)? – Should socialised costs be considered? Developers struggle to know where possible connection points are – Can this be made easier?
5
Grid Capacity Low summer use of low pressure grid can mean demand is not high enough – Can we discuss options such as pushing gas back up the grid?
6
Gas Analysis Much existing equipment designed for large volumes of gas: expensive, and not always appropriate to biomethane Manufacturers want to understand process for getting equipment approved by Ofgem
7
Propane Enrichment Operators understand requirement to raise the CV to meet grid average BUT this is costly and diminishes biomethane’s green credentials Can we explore alternatives? – accept blending where possible – change the financial model for gas distribution – identify sources of biopropane – reduce grid average CV
