2. Josef gives the background information (telling his story) which reveals Gemmas identity and is a foundation in understanding the significance of Gemmas story. Technique: The story is told in third person. (Unique) Shows the story from Josefs perspective. Without Josefs retelling of what occurred the reader would not be able to fully understand the significance of the story or Gemmas identity.

3. Identity Eva – marriage name (married to Avenger). Mandlestein – Aron's surname. Eva Potocki – the name which was forged in order for Gemma to gain safe passage. Her name(s) gives her a sense of identity. Then we will call you princess, Josef said. Princess Briar Rose after the story. But he used the Polish word: Ksiezniczka. p211 She is part of their family/belongs. E.g. We will take charge of her, he said to the others. We are her family now. p215 Prior to this Gemma had no family and no name. By belonging to this group she has been able to gain a sense of identity. Her identity was a mystery. Technique – repetition of the phrase I do not know. P211. This emphasises the fact that Gemma did not know her name and where she came from. As a result she had no sense of identify.

4. Technique: Short, sharp sentences. E.g. No one survived. Two men only escaped; two men were found there at the wars end. Four men. And one woman. Ksiezniczka. p196 Effect: creates suspense and mystery.

5. Significance of her story is realised I only remember the fairytale and it seems, somehow, that it is my story as well. P211 my story. The story gives her a sense of identity. It is the story of Gemmas real life.... I shall never forget the dark prince who kissed me awake. p222 (elements are incorporated of both real life and the fairytale) The story of Briar Rose unravels in castle. The reader discovers what happens in real life and can link it to Gemmas retelling of the story in home.
