Grace Darling

Grace Darling was the daughter of William Darling, the lighthouse keeper on Longstone lighthouse on the Farne Islands.

It was a very lonely life as no-one else lived on the island. William and Grace had to keep the light burning to warn ships about the dangerous rocks.

One stormy night the steamship Forfarshire, with 60 passengers on board, was passing Little Farne when the engine stopped. The captain tried to use the sails to get ashore safely but the boat was driven onto the Harcar Rocks.

Grace Darling saw the wreck from the lighthouse and called her father. ‘There I see a ship’, she said as she peered into the dark.

It was such a terrible storm that neither Grace nor her father thought that anyone could have survived. But as dawn rose they saw people on the rocks.

Grace and her father set out in their rowing boat to try to rescue them. When they arrived on Little Farne there were nine survivors but only enough room for five people in the boat.

They bravely rowed back to Longstone. Then William and two of the crew of the ship went back for the people who had been left behind.

When Grace Darling’s story was heard, people thought she was very brave to have helped her father and she was given a silver medal to remember her bravery.
