2% is frozen fresh water in ice caps and glaciers,
1% is fresh water in lakes and streams, groundwater, and water vapor in the atmosphere.

10. Why Study Water? Roughly 70 % of an adult’s body is made up of water.
Water is absolutely essential to the human body’s survival. A person can live for about a month without food, but only about a week without water.
Water dissolves more substances than any other liquid. Wherever it travels, water carries chemicals, minerals, and nutrients with it.

The average person in the United States uses anywhere from gallons of water per day. Flushing the toilet actually takes up the largest amount of this water.
Somewhere between 70 and 75 percent of the earth’s surface is covered with water.
Without water, life would not exist!

We can use less than one percent of the water on Earth for drinking and personal hygiene. We also use this fresh water for agriculture, fisheries, transportation, heating and cooling, manufacturing, and many other purposes.
Unfortunately, unless we use our freshwater wisely, rivers, lakes, and groundwater can become depleted or polluted, and unavailable or
unsuitable for life.
