MOON PHASES Moon Phase Simulation I Moon Phase Simulation

Oreo Moon Lab Purpose: To represent each phase of the moon. Each group of 4 students needs: 4 Oreo cookies 1 Plastic knife 2 Pieces of paper

Oreo Moon Lab Procedures: Label paper with each phase of the moon. Carefully remove tops from Oreo’s. Remove filling from some of the Oreos in order to make the cookie represent each phase. IE. The full moon will have all of the filling on it and the new moon will have none. Place the Oreo moon in the correct phase position on your paper. Raise your hand for the teacher to check your moon phases. Once you lab has been checked you may eat the materials. Clean up and begin working on your vocabulary.

Phases of the Moon New moon – occurs when the moon is between the earth and the sun. The moon cannot be seen from earth. Waxing – After the new moon, the waxing phases begin. You see more of the illuminated half of the moon each night. Full moon -- occurs when all of the moons surface facing the earth reflects light. Waning – After the full moon, the waning phases begin. You see less of the illuminated half of the moon each night. It takes 29.5 days for the moon to complete its cycle of phases.

Phases of the moon

Waxing Light on right – See more of the Moon every night.

Waning Light on left - See less of the moon every night.

MOON PHASES MOON QUIZ – #9 ANSWER THE ESSENTIAL QUESTION. What causes the phases of the moon? (1-2 SENTENCES ONLY!!)

The Changing Moon New Moon When the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun, we can’t see it at all.

The Changing Moon Crescent All we can see is a thin sliver of Moon Notice – Waning looks like a C WaxingWaning

The Changing Moon Quarter Moon The Moon has completed ¼ (1 st Quarter) or ¾ (3 rd Quarter) of its journey around the earth. 1 st Quarter rises at noon and sets at midnight. 3 rd Quarter rises at midnight and can still be seen the next morning. Waxing Waning

The Changing Moon Gibbous Latin for hump. Means fat, swollen, or humpbacked. Gibbous moons are often seen during the day because they are so bright. Waxing Waning
