Paul is SMART! This weeks strategy is TIPs and Genre T – Title I – Information (captions, footnotes, etc.) P – Pictures Genre – what category does it fall under?
2
Example: Recognizing Energy Article What was the TIPs and genre?
3
Your turn!
4
Finally, The ATOM as we know it Unit 5: Structure of Matter
5
Size of an atom An atom is EXTREMELY small About 1,000,000 atoms can fit the inside the size of the period at the end of this sentence. a million atoms can fit in there!
6
But what is an Atom? An atom is… – The smallest form of an element All atoms of an element have the same characteristics (i.e. # of protons) – An atom has 3 sub-atomic particles Proton (+ charge) Neutron (no charge) Electron (-charge) REMEMBER, all matter is made up of atoms!
7
Atomic Mass (or the mass of an atom) The mass of an atom is mainly the mass of the protons and neutrons combined Electrons barely have a mass compared to protons and neutrons
8
Bohr Model
9
Sodium Atom (Na)- electron cloud model
10
How do the sub-atomic particles compare? Sub-atomic particle chargelocationRelative mass Proton neutron electron
11
Practice test question: What is the smallest unit of an element that still has the properties of that element? A.an atom B.a compound C.an electron D.a molecule
