WHAT IS MANUAL HANDLING? Definition: Using your body to exert force in order to: “ ” Handle Support or Restrain

A repetitive or prolonged application of force, movement or an awkward posture.

MSD ’S = M USCULO S KELETAL D ISORDERS Muscular sprains and strains. Back injuries. RSIs (Repetitive Strain Injuries). Abdominal hernias. Soft tissue injuries (wrists, arms, shoulders, neck or legs). Chronic pain.

2. FIND Carefully work through a JSA / SWMS for Hazardous Manual Handling

4. REVIEW Always try to improve the way we do things. Carry out a JSA / SWMS for any change in procedure.

LIFTING & CARRYING TECHNIQUES Check the path. Position yourself for the lift. Assess the Lift. Back straight, bend knees, squat for the lift. Keep load close to your body.
